What to expect from depot replacement of SSD

I have an Inspiron that is around 5 years old and out of warranty, running Windows 11 Pro.  Lately it has been sounding an alarm and showing a screen with a upc code, indicating that the storage device failed a diagnostic test. (a test I did not initiate, and otherwise have seen no indication of device failure).  That leads me to an option to send the laptop in for service.  I don't mind sending it in, and the price is reasonable and less than a new laptop.  But before I do so, I need to know if this service will include backing up and restoring the contents of the drive so that I don't lose any files or registry settings.

No, it won't.  All Dell will do is replace the drive.

If the system will still read the drive (i.e, it's not completely missing from system setup), a local shop may be able to back up what's there for you and replace the drive.  The cost will be higher than that for a simple hardware repair.

If the system does not see the drive at all, that's a very different scenario and you'll need data recovery.  Data recovery from unrecognized SSDs may not be possible at all, and if it is, brace yourself for a repair bill that will be well into four figures.

@ejn63​ Thanks for the reply.  Outside of this sporadic alert, the laptop seems to be functioning just fine.  We have offsite backup so I'm not concerned about actual loss of files.  Mostly, I just want to avoid having to re-install Windows onto a bare drive.  Looks like it might be easier to just buy a new laptop.  This would be a low-end one.  It is my wife's and she doesn't use it for much.  Looks like I can get a new HP or Lenovo for just a few dollars more than what Dell is quoting to replace the drive, and nearly half of the cheapest new Dell.

If the system is still functional, make an image of the existing drive to an external hard drive and then replace the internal SSD, and restore the image.
