Unable to find compatable fingerprint scanner

Hi

The fingerprint scanner on my Inspiron 5502/5509 no longer works.  The button is fine, as it still works as a power on/off button, but Windows no longer can find it.

I've tried updating drivers/software to no avail.

Troubleshooting Laptop Fingerprint Scanner Not Found

If your laptop's fingerprint scanner is not found, follow these steps:

  1. Driver Installation:

    • Ensure that the correct drivers for the fingerprint reader are installed. Locate the appropriate drivers from the Dell Drivers & Downloads section.
    • Verify that the driver matches your system's hardware interface to avoid compatibility issues.
  2. Firmware Update:

    • Check if there is a firmware update available for the fingerprint reader. This can also be found under the Security drop-down on the Dell website.
  3. ControlVault Driver:

    • If the ControlVault driver is installed, you may need to remove it and reinstall it. Use the installation wizard to uninstall the driver completely before reinstalling.
  4. TPM Access:

    • Ensure that your system has access to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). This is necessary for configuring and enrolling fingerprints.
  5. Windows Hello Configuration:

    • If you are using Windows Hello, make sure it is properly configured. You must set up a PIN first, as Windows Hello requires a PIN for fingerprint enrollment.
  6. Check Settings:

    • Navigate to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options to see if the fingerprint option is available. If not, the driver or firmware may not be installed correctly.
  7. Reboot the System:

    • After making changes, restart your laptop to ensure that all settings and installations take effect.

If the fingerprint scanner is still not found after following these steps, consider reaching out to Dell support for further assistance.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

So having done all of that and more 10 days ago and it not making any difference, today it is suddenly fine.  Two weeks of it not working, and then it starts again - weird!
