SPD5118 resume error (-6) on suspend (Linux, BIOS write protection issue)
Hello,
I’m an owner of a Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 laptop (firmware version 1.32.0) running Linux (Arch Linux, kernel 6.17.6 and 6.12.56 LTS).
During suspend/resume cycles, the kernel logs show repeated failures from the spd5118 driver:
spd5118 12-0050: Failed to write b = 0: -6
spd5118 12-0050: PM: dpm_run_callback(): spd5118_resume [spd5118] returns -6
According to the upstream discussion this happens because the BIOS/EC enables write-protection on the SPD5118 EEPROM, making it impossible for the OS to access it for synchronization.
The protection flag appears to be permanently enabled by Dell firmware, even though the SPD device only needs to be read for monitoring purposes.
As a result, Linux systems cannot properly resume from suspend, hibernation and hybrid-sleep.
Please forward this issue to the BIOS/firmware team. This SPD write-protection behavior prevents Linux systems from resuming correctly

Unfortunately, (Arch Linux, kernel 6.17.6 and 6.12.56 LTS) is not supported by Dell.
To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them. Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.
