Recurring Hinge Issue in Dell Inspiron 15 3520 – Poor Support for Public Institution
I want to raise awareness about a recurring mechanical design defect in the Dell Inspiron 15 3520. I am Dr. Rajesh from Mahatma Gandhi University, and this is an official laptop used for academic work.
The hinge of my laptop had previously broken and was replaced under service. Unfortunately, the same hinge has broken again, making it impossible to open the screen. Despite this being a common issue with this model, Dell’s support team is not addressing it properly. They confirmed the repeated fault, but insist that the repair would only be available as paid support (~INR 6982 + tax), even though this is clearly a design flaw.
Here’s a summary of my chat with Dell support:
I explained that the hinge is broken again and that this was a recurring problem.
They acknowledged the previous service but refused free repair, citing warranty limits on the part.
I requested escalation to a senior officer or email contact, but they refused and offered only a callback.
Despite agreeing to arrange a callback, I haven’t received any further resolution.
I am sharing this because:
This is an official machine for a public university. We purchase Dell products regularly.
A repeated mechanical defect like this affects user experience, reputation, and goodwill.
Dell’s support is unwilling to take responsibility for a clear design flaw, forcing loyal customers to pay repeatedly.
Has anyone else faced similar issues with this model? I hope Dell takes note of these repeated mechanical failures and improves support for institutional customers.

Not the same model, but I'm also having an issue with a repeated failure and what appears to be lack of adequate support from Dell - my issues is 'in display assembly' rubber bumpers detaching on a 2 in 1 Inspiron - see my experience so far documented here:

I suggest also having a look at Dell Customer Support Charter page in your country (try googling it) to see if there is any escalation options listed (e.g. a direct customer service email) to directly escalate to the next level, if 1st level support refuse to escalate it for you.
