Power Issue: Inspiron 14 plus (7420)

On two occasions after I shutdown the computer (Windows 11), I had to disconnect the battery and press the power button to discharge/drain any residual power in order for the computer to boot.  Prior to that, when I press the power button, the LED next to the power port would flash red  (correction: amber) - only when the power button was pressed.

After I drain the residual power the laptop would operate normally and the LED would turn white while the battery was charging until it was at 100 percent.

I was wondering if any one else had this issue.

If you're experiencing power-related issues with your Dell Inspiron 14 Plus (7420), such as the laptop not turning on, not charging, or other power-related problems, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Check Power Adapter and Cable: Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and the power outlet. Make sure the cable is not damaged or frayed. Also, check for any loose connections.

  2. Try a Different Outlet: Sometimes, the power outlet might be the issue. Plug the power adapter into a different outlet to see if it makes a difference.

  3. Check LED Indicators: Many laptops have LED indicators that show the charging status. Check if the LED lights up when the laptop is connected to the power adapter. If it doesn't light up, the power adapter might be faulty.

  4. Reset AC Power: Disconnect the power adapter from both the laptop and the power outlet. Hold down the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power. Then, reconnect the power adapter and try turning on the laptop.

  5. Remove External Devices: Disconnect any external devices, such as USB drives or peripherals, from the laptop. Sometimes, a faulty external device can prevent the laptop from powering on.

  6. Perform a Hard Reset: If the laptop isn't responding, perform a hard reset by disconnecting the power adapter and removing the laptop battery (if it's removable). Hold down the power button for about 15 seconds. Then, reconnect the battery and power adapter and try turning on the laptop.

  7. Check Battery Health: If your laptop has a removable battery, check the health of the battery. A failing battery could be the cause of power issues. You might need to replace the battery if it's not holding a charge.

  8. Boot Without Battery: If your laptop has a removable battery, try booting it without the battery while connected to the power adapter. Sometimes, a faulty battery can prevent the laptop from turning on.

  9. Check for Overheating: Overheating can sometimes cause power issues. Make sure the laptop's cooling vents are clear of dust and debris. If the laptop is overheating, it might shut down to prevent damage.

  10. BIOS Update: Check Dell's official support website for BIOS updates for your laptop model. An outdated BIOS could cause power-related problems.

  11. Contact Dell Support: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider reaching out to Dell's customer support for assistance. They might be able to provide specific troubleshooting steps based on your laptop model.

  12. Professional Help: If you're not comfortable performing these steps on your own, or if the issue seems to be more complex, consider seeking help from a professional technician.

Power issues can have various causes, ranging from simple connectivity problems to more complex hardware issues. Be patient and methodical in your troubleshooting process, and ensure that you're working in a safe and static-free environment.

It can happen if the battery is drained almost completely -- was that the case?

No matter what, the system should still be under warranty, so if the issue continues, call Dell to have the system repaired.

@ejn63  Thanks,  it happened again, the battery was not completely drained as far as I know. However, it is possible that I closed the cover before the laptop completely shutdown and the battery was slowly drained.

@AdrianG001 Thank you for your response.   I mentioned in the original post that I did what you included as Number 6, and I have recently updated the bios (8/29/2023), and it happened another time (10/4) to which I repeated #6.
