Laptop shuts down in sleep mode

I'm noticing that when I shut the lid on my laptop next time I open it up, Windows has shut down and so it has to reload and I have to restart all the apps.  Obviously this completely defeats the object of having a 'sleep' mode.

Any ideas?

What is the computer model and the OS installed?

What is the current charge capacity of the battery?  Open a command prompt with admin privilege and type

powercfg /batteryreport

The battery has lost about 30% of its design capacity but probably isn't the issue. More likely something on the system is still running in sleep mode and draining the battery as a result.

See if the same problem occurs when the system is powered off.  If it  doesn't, you'll be on the hunt for a power-sapping application that's interrupting sleep mode.

so, it happens even when plugged in, so I dont think it is the battery.  I'm not sure I understand about seeing if the same thing happens if it is powered off- as I would expect everything to shut down then.
