Issue with Laptop Keys Not Responding

Some keys on the laptop keyboard are not working properly. The C, V, M, X, and Enter keys do not respond when pressed, which makes typing and using certain commands difficult. This issue may be caused by dust under the keys, a keyboard driver problem, or a hardware fault

Please share the model # of your system. Contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag with them so that they can verify the ownership and warranty status. This will also generate a unique Technical Support case for your unique Service Tag. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offerings.

To confirm a hardware failure of the keyboard, I'd recommend running the keyboard diagnostic:

  1. Shutdown the unit
  2. Hold down the Fn key and the power button together
  3. The quick test should automatically start
  4. Press the ESC key to abort the quick scan
  5. Click on Advanced Test
  6. Click on the keyboard icon only and start a test
  7. Type on the interactive test to see if those keys still fail to respond

Should the same keys fail to respond in this test, then the hardware has failed and you would want to replace the keyboard.
