Inspiron 7573 M.2 SSD Upgrade

Hi.

It's time to upgrade.

The original specs for the 7573 Insperon simply say 256gb or 512 gb.

On the "parts page", they list

Dell M.2 PCIe NVME Gen 3x4 Class 40 2280 Solid State Drive - 512GB

and the 256gb version as the only acceptable SSD options; although 1tb and 2tb versions do show on the website in general.

SO here is the question:  Is the 512gb limit real or is it simply that larger SSD's were not available when the PC was sold?  I am inclined to put a 2TB drive in the unit - - -> but I want to make sure it will work.  I checked the Crucial website; and they seem to think the 2TB drive will work just fine.

I have no issue with the cloning and hardware installation process; and am comfortable with working in the machine for this type of upgrade.

Thanks

It's just more or less how technically components work.  Battery with higher capacity (number of cells) would provide longer runtime as long as it is a compatible and validated to be used on your system.

Same thing would go for the memory.  Using higher speed memory will be downclocked and work at the memory speed the processor is rated for.

In this topic, your system supports PCIe gen 3 solid state drive.  If you install the higher capacity, say 2 TB, it will work and you will see full 2 TB capacity.  But, if you install higher speed, say PCIe gen 4 solid state drive, it will run at the speed the storage controller is rated for, which is PCIe gen 3, or around 3500 MB/s.

Any maximum capacity in Dell specs was referred to the validated and tested to work with the system at design phase.  If the market has higher capacity storage media available, they should work for your system.  Crucial guarantee to work is also another indication that higher than specs does work.

Thanks for the feedback.

I am a bit miffed; because of two "questionable" experiences recently with Dell parts.

This laptop was originally supplied with a 56wh battery.  Ordered a replacement. . . .the 56wh battery wasn't listed; but the 42wh 3cell was - - - since it was "dell recommended" with no alternative listed . . .I ordered (and am now returning) the 42wh battery.

Inspired. . .I ordered RAM. 2400mhz is listed on the original specs.  3200mhz ram replacement was recommended by dell.  Figured 3200mhz was the way to go (faster is better?). Upon installation. . . .the RAM posted as 2400mhz. (BUT IT WORKS FINE  - keeping it).  Upon contacting Dell; I came to learn that the 2400 wasn't listed because it was out of stock. . . .  Funny enough; Crucial website does not recommend 3200mhz ram for the laptop.

So - - this is why I am "checking it twice" regarding SSD replacement.

Thank you.

I am now emboldened to plunk down some money.

As near as I can tell; I am ordering a drive with the same "specs" as the one I have now. . . only 10 times larger. ;)

Not looking for speed - - > only capacity.

It will take a few days to get parts. . . .and find time to do the cloning. I will report back in due course.

OK. . . a few days have passed.

SHORT STORY:  SUCCESS with Crucial 2TB drive.

Incidentally; I did ask Dell Support via email about upgrade options.  I was told (as expected) that 512gb was the limit for my hardware.

Upgrade was not without drama

I had cloned original drive with Marium Reflect. Initially, new drive would not boot.

After 2 hours. . .40 reboots; creation of a Reflect Rescue Disk; and an in-depth exploration of Windows Diagnostic screens. . . I am up and running.

Only thing still weird is that in BIOS the old drive was reported on the SATA 2 port; new drive reports on a the M.2 port.

Moral of the story: Don't buy a laptop without screws on the bottom and glued in components.

what did you actually end up doing to get it to work. I am trying to get a crucial 1tb drive to work,  Cloned fine won't boot
