Inspiron 5505 Screen flashes on/off - MS Explorer won't load

We purchased the laptop in 2021 as a Windows 10 machine. It did a Windows 11 update automatically about 6 months later. A couple weeks ago it did an automatic update and now the machine does not function properly. The logon screen comes up just fine that shows there is no hardware issue. However, when I log on, the desktop flashes on and off. The taskbar never loads.

I booted to the BIOS and let it do a hardware check and it reports no errors.

Is there a way to roll-back the recent MS update or do I have to try to restore to Day-1 from the micro SD card I created with Acronis?

OK. I thinks this is resolved.

Restart and press F10 repeatedly. The machine enters a diagnostic mode. The ONLY route that would work for me was a reinstallation of Windows "from your machine". I had tried reinstalling from the internet (a MS site?) but the laptop couldn't connect to my home network. Perhaps there was also an issue with the wifi drivers.

Hi

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Win + B is a keyboard shortcut that restarts the graphics driver in Windows.

Allegedly.

Graphics Restart Shortcut

According to the search results, the keyboard shortcut to restart the graphics driver on Windows 10 and 11 is:

Win + Ctrl + Shift + B

The internet is so helpful.

Win 11 Rollback to Last Known

In Windows 11, the “Last Known Good Configuration” (LKGC) option is not available by default. However, you can still use the built-in recovery options to roll back to a previous state. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Method 1: Using the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

  1. Restart your computer and repeatedly press the F8 key until you see the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) menu.
  2. Select “Troubleshoot” and then “Advanced options.”
  3. Click “System Restore” and follow the prompts to select a restore point from a previous date when your system was functioning correctly.
  4. If you don’t have a restore point available, you can try “Go back to the previous version of Windows” (available within 10 days of installing Windows 11).

Method 2: Using the Settings App

  1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under “Reset this PC,” click “Get started” and select “Keep my files” or “Remove everything” (depending on your needs).
  3. Follow the prompts to complete the rollback process.

Important Notes:

  • The LKGC option is not available in Windows 11, so you won’t see it in the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • The rollback process will restore your system to a previous state, but it won’t undo changes made to your personal files.
  • If you’ve made significant changes to your system or installed software, you may need to reinstall or reconfigure those applications after the rollback.
  • The 10-day window for rolling back to Windows 10 is only available after installing Windows 11. After this period, you’ll need to perform a clean install or use a third-party recovery tool.

Additional Tips:

  • To re-enable the F8 key boot menu in Windows 11, you’ll need to modify the registry or use a third-party tool. This is not recommended unless you’re experienced with registry editing.
  • If you’re experiencing issues with Windows 11, try using the built-in troubleshooting tools or seeking assistance from Microsoft Support before attempting a rollback.

Remember to always create regular system backups and keep your Windows 11 installation media handy in case you need to perform a clean install or repair your system.

@ann_droid - - I cannot access the BIOS functions on this machine. Are we sure that it's with the graphics driver? Yes, the screen blinks, but I can open the Task Manager and THAT does not blink on/off.

Hi

I do not know, just throwing out some possible avenues to fix or eliminate issues.

Circling back to the laptop this morning.

When I open the Task Manager (does NOT blink), I see that Explorer.exe is switching between Running and Suspended

I don't believe this issue can be resolved remotely. I think it will have to go back to Dell. How is that accomplished?
