Inspiron 15 3520 Laptop - Replace Realtek Wireless Network Adapter with Intel?

To All:

The second Realtek Wireless Network Adapter in my one and a half year old Inspiron 3520 laptop is starting to fail. Dell sent me a replacement while the laptop was still under warranty which was easy to install. The adapter is a Realtek 8821CE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC. I can only conclude that these Realtek Wifi cards do not last.

I am looking at replacing it with an Intel AX210NGW Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6E Bluetooth 5.3 Network Adapter. Internet research says that the Realtek 8821CE has only one antenna, but when I replaced the WiFi card, there were two antenna terminals (black wire and white wire). Internet research says that the Intel AX210NGW has two antennas and suggests that the Intel AX210NGW cannot replace the Realtek 8821CE.

Can I replace the Realtek 8821CE WiFi card in my Inspiron 15 3520 laptop with an Intel AX210NGW WiFi card?

Thank you,

Steve

Going off of the product specs, it doesn't really specify which WLAN cards would be accepted. That said, I typically recommend using the parts that are already installed since you know it'll be compatible. So to play it safe, I'd go with another Realtek card. However, taking a look at the WLAN cards that I see are listed compatible with this model, you could use an Intel 9462 or an AX201 card. Since the WLAN slot is just an m.2 slot, its possible the AX210 will work, but it would be a bit overkill for the aged platform if it even is detected. I'd probably go with the AX201, but the 9462 is a bit cheaper out there.

Thanks for the reply. With one failed Realtek 8821CE card and a second one that was replaced under warranty now failing again, I am not going to get a third Realtek 8821CE card.

The Intel AX201 card has different pins than the Realtek 8821CE. The Intel AX210 and Realtek 8821CE have the same pins. Also on Amazon, the AX210 is cheaper than the AX201 and many more are sold than the AX201.

At one and a half years old, my Inspiron 15 3520 laptop is not that aged. That is coming from someone who has been using Dells for over 30 years.

@srhaymes

Interestingly (or confusingly), we have 2 different versions of the Inspiron 15 3520. The spec sheet I provided earlier was for the older/legacy model which came out around 2012 or so. Hence, I thought we were working with an older tag.

Here is the spec sheet for the newer 2025 model. So the parts I found earlier today were actually meant for this newer model. Since this spec sheet does specifically mention the Realtek RTL8821CE, Intel 9462, and Intel AX201, then these are the options I would stick to for compatibility reasons. As in, they would have been tested and confirmed to work in this model. I do see what you mean with the RTL8821CE and AX210 having the same physical pin out, but since the port is just a standard M.2, then any 2230 WLAN card should fit fine.

It wouldn't hurt to try the AX210, but if the card isn't detected or isn't functional, then at the least we can say that it was due to not being compatible. At which point, shooting for the AX201 would be your next best bet for the faster WLAN speeds.

Thanks for the link to the spec sheet. I already had the spec sheet on by computer and should have looked at it first. My mistake. I also asked a question on Amazon and there are reports of the Intel AX210 WiFi card working on the Inspiron 3520. Since the AX210 is newer than the AX201, that could explain why many more AX210's are being sold now. I will try the AX210.
