Building quality is very bad. I always open very carefully but I dont know how the both hinge came out from the screen panel. Very worst model

It's built to sell for the price it did in 2021 -- just like every other budget consumer-grade notebook on the market.

It is not possible to build a robust notebook for the $500 this system sold for.

If they cannot give a good product at a low price then they should not give a weak product either. The buyers think that if it is Dell's product then it must be good, how would they know that he has chosen Dell and is using it. 🫡

Seems to be a common problem with some laptops these days with loads of DIY fix videos out there.  I think the manufactures should take note.  If they can't afford to supply robust mechanical components with their laptops they should at least make sure the springs in the hinges are not set so tight.  Some major retailers (UK) who provide laptop repair services won't even entertain hinge repairs.  It doesn't instill confidence in the consumer.

Machine is an 11 gen class machine so it is a couple of years old. I have a much older XPS 15 9570 that runs fine.

Mind you I take care of my machines and keep dust under control etc

XPS 15 9570 is one of top of the line consumer laptop from Dell.  It was built with good quality materials.

Inspiron 15 3511 is an economy, budgeted tier model (3000 basic, 5000 mid-range, 7000 high-end).

They are absolutely not comparable in performance, quality, pricing.

@HedgeFundManager

I invested so much money to purchase what do you think I would not take care of my laptop

I saw many students having this model have hinge problem but why should it be.

I'm not big gient to invest very heavy money. People even purchase in 30k I did not see any issue with that machine

The design (not robust) is not great on these models.  The hinge is metal but they seem to break away from the laptop case as the connection (screw housing) is not very robust.

I appreciate they are a budget model but does that mean consumers should expect the mechanics of the hinge design to have an expected lifespan?

Having said all that I have no issue with the specs compared to other laptops of the time.

I feel your pain Man_ish

That's exactly what it does mean.  The price the system sells for dictates the design and the lifespan.

Consumer-grade notebooks are designed to last for a couple of years and then be replaced.  It does not matter if it's an Inspiron, IdeaPad, Pavilion, ACER, ASUS, etc.

@ejn63 In my case the machine was only just out of its warranty period.  That's not acceptable as far as I'm concerned.  The retailer who I purchased from went through the motions with regards to repairs but refunded my repair deposit because they were unable to carry it out.  Eventually I had to repair the laptop myself with some JB weld as seen on a YouTube video and set the hinge springs slightly looser so as not to hit further down the line.  This model comes up time and time again in these repair videos.  Not having a pop at Dell because other brands  are just as guilty.  The quality of all laptop brands seems to have taken a tumble. It doesn't seem much of and ask that a laptop lid hinge mechanism, a major component of a laptop, should stand the test of time.  I didn't throw my laptop around with undue care so from my point of view it's a design flaw.  I do appreciate where you are coming from with regards to premium and budget laptops.  It's a shame because apart from that issue the laptop performs decently.

Those photos show a lot of corrosion on the metal suggesting the cause of the metal failure

It's the plastic housing where the tiny metal nuts sit they become stressed and break away.  The top picture shows this clearly as the plastic is still attached to the nuts.  For this type of set up the spring hinges in my opinion are set too tight.  They can be loosened by turning the nut on the hinge mechanism.  Obviously, you don't want the laptop lid too loose but set too tight places undue stress on the plastic housing hence why it breaks away from its intended home.  It's only through experience why I understand Man_ish's angst.

Unhelpful comments hinting that people should have purchased a more premium product are just insulting and rude.
