Inspiron 14 Plus 7430 battery life issue

Inspiron 14 Plus 7430

Inspiron 14 Plus 7430

Hi,

I bought an Inspiron 14 Plus 7430 about a year and half ago and I've noticed for a couple of months a battery issue. It gets drained very quickly. I barely can use the laptop for about 1h before the battery gets empty. I'm not doing any intensive work, just surfing the internet. This is a 4-cell 64Whr battery so obviously it should last several hours. I didn't have this problem in the beginning, nor did I have it with my previous Dell laptop. I understand a battery isn't eternal but just after a year it's really disappointing. Is there anything I can do or check to diagnose a problem, or do I have to replace it?

Thanks

Run a battery report -- open a command prompt with admin privilege and enter

powercfg /batteryreport

What is the current charge capacity of the battery?

See above.  Post the current charge capacity of the battery.

@ejn63

Hi,

Here's the link for the report that got generated by the command.

Not sure what to infer from this.

Thanks

@NextGenDell

Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this.

I had an Inspiron 14 5445 before and it worked fine, the battery had great life.

Unfortunately it was robbed that's why I decided to go for another Inspiron, and I thought the Inspiron 14 Plus had great specifications. I must say I'm really disappointed with that model. The backcover rubber feet came off and got lost. Dell has refused to send new ones, and now the battery that's kind of dead after a year. If there's no fix for this, I'm done with Dell.

The battery has lost about 25% of its capacity and the cycle count is high for a system that's only 1.5 years old -- has it been on AC power most or all of the time?

@ejn63

Well, in the beginning I would charge it in the night and be on battery during the day. So no it hasn't been on AC power most of the times. It's only for a couple of months now that I have to plug it to AC often as it gets drained very quickly.

How can the battery lose 25% of its capacity in such a short time? My wife has an HP laptop and after 6 years the battery still works and holds the charge. Same with my HP office laptop, the battery survives about 5 hours before getting empty, and this is a laptop I've been using everyday for 5 years now.

If that HP  office notebook is a Probook or similar, the components inside are of higher grade than they would be in a Pavilion consumer-grade notebook, which like the Inspiron is built to a price.  You'll find the same with a Latitude vs an Inspiron.

The battery needs to be replaced if you want the runtimes back to where they were.

@ejn63

the Inspiron 14 Plus was around €1100, so it's not comparable with a HP Notebook (model 14-cf0020nvf) that cost about €500. And that HP's battery still works fine after 6 years.

And Dell is supposed to make computers for Professionals, well, at leat I used to think. Looks like they now manufacture cheap quality stuff from China. At least they're smart, the battery died just after the 1-year service guarantee.

I will contact them to see what's their say about this.

Thanks for helping anyway.

Dell's notebooks are the same as you'll find from HP in terms of manufacture -- a cheap line (Inspiron/Pavilion) and a business line (Probook/Latitude), plus professional grade systems.

Hi,

Some update on my issue. I contacted Dell Support and they sent a technician to replace the battery, free of charge. The replacement was done on April 17th. The new battery is now ok obviously, though in 3 weeks it has already lost 2000 mWh of its designed capacity.

So it seems either the battery is of cheap quality or somehow the computer damages it.

@BennyLava That's crazy ! I've not yet replaced or changed mine but i have the same issue, i can't even use my laptop as a laptop whereas i did chose this computer to have this kind of performances and mobility (so the 14 inch screen).
I'm disappointed about that and I am not reassured if the new battery is that bad.

Do you have any update of your battery life since your post ?

@guenole_k ok so it seems several of us have this issue. Obviously a product decect then. Well the new battery is ok but its duration is pretty disappointing for a 64Wh one. Personally I'm not going to buy Dell products anymore.

@BennyLava I really understand your feeling, it's a big disappointment.
Basically, we have a desktop and not what we wanted to buy : a laptop...

Thanks for your feedback.
