Inspiron 14 5410 2-in-1, hinge jammed, screen cracked

I got my Inspiron 14 5410 2-in-1 about a year ago. Today when i opened it I felt the hinge was hard and when i opened the screen started cracking. I went on dell's website and found that several other users are facing a similar problem. When contacted for help, they said to renew my Warranty; but this is not an issue caused by me, this is clearly a product malfunction that is commonly occurred. I request Dell to revert with a solution.

Dell hinge/hinge assembly policy

If the system is covered under the additionally purchased Accidental Damage Service the hinges may be repaired 1 time per calendar year.

If the laptop hinge or hinge assembly fails outside of the purchased warranty period, or is a result of customer caused damage, then the customer will be required to pay for the repair, shipping, and parts using our expired warranty service offering. The customer may also opt to purchase the necessary parts to replace the hinges themselves or have a local technician do the work.

If you are experiencing issues with the hinges on your Dell system, please contact Dell GHN support, even if your system is out of warranty. While we here on the Forum cannot guarantee that any actions will be taken, a tech support agent will review your system's condition and make a decision accordingly. You can reach our tech support by clicking the "Get Help Now" chat button located at the bottom right corner of this page. Our agents will determine if your case qualifies for an extended warranty. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

If the hinge on your Dell Inspiron 14 5410 2-in-1 laptop is jammed and the screen is cracked, you'll need to take specific steps to address both issues:

  1. Hinge Jammed:

    • A jammed hinge can make it difficult or impossible to open or close the laptop. Attempting to force it open can cause further damage. Here's what you can do:
    • Safety First: Power off the laptop completely.
    • Gently Apply Pressure: Try gently applying pressure in the direction that would open the laptop. Sometimes, a stuck hinge can be freed with a little careful manipulation.
    • Professional Repair: If the hinge remains jammed, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Contact Dell's customer support or an authorized service center to get the hinge fixed professionally.
  2. Cracked Screen:

    • A cracked screen will need to be replaced. Here's what you can do:
    • Backup Data: If your laptop still powers on and you can see anything on the screen, immediately back up your important data to an external drive or cloud storage.
    • Contact Dell Support: If your laptop is under warranty, contact Dell's customer support to inquire about warranty coverage for screen replacement. If it's not under warranty, you can still contact Dell to get a quote for the screen replacement.
    • Third-Party Repair Service: You can also seek out third-party laptop repair services. Be sure to choose a reputable service center with experience in laptop screen replacements. They can provide a quote for the repair.
    • DIY (Advanced): If you have experience with laptop repairs and are comfortable doing it yourself, you can purchase a replacement screen online and follow online guides or videos for your specific laptop model to replace the screen. However, this is a delicate operation and should only be attempted by those with the necessary skills and tools.

Remember that attempting to repair the laptop yourself, especially if it's still under warranty, can void the warranty, so consider your options carefully. If the hinge is jammed, it's generally safer to leave it to professionals. Additionally, ensure that you back up your data before sending your laptop for repair to avoid potential data loss.

This happened to my yesterday (10/15/23) on a 2-in-1 laptop that I got on April '22. Seems like a product defect. Is Dell doing anything to help customers who are experiencing this issue?

It seems like a build issue,  dell should fix the build issue or return these faulty products.

The screen for my Inspiron 14 5410 2-in-1 has cracked for the 2nd time in last 3 years. First time it was under warranty. I am stuck now. This is purely a product design issue and should be addressed by Dell.

Mine just cracked due to the same issue. Definitely defective design and product. Dell should replace the hinge and screen for free. Never buying a 2 in 1 again.

Hundreds of complains of exact nature and Dell simply ignores . This is unbelievable . Even if they market any new laptop with 90% discount , I will not even go near it . Bye to Dell , hello to surface , Acer , Lenovo ...

I have a question to Dell - is this forum created within  Dell domain so that victims like us will be chatting with each other while you watch idle as if we are complaining about another company ? Dell , remember this .. if you continue to fail to listen to devouted customers like us .. you will surely loose the market , or maybe you already are....
