How can I speed up my windows 10 dell Inspiron laptop?

Hi everyone, I’m using an old Dell laptop (4GB RAM and 256GB SSD) that I bought about 8 years ago, and it's been running very slow lately on Windows 10. Boot time is long, apps take a while to open, and the system often feels laggy even with basic tasks like browsing or opening File Explorer. I'm not sure if this is caused by outdated hardware, too many background programs, or Windows 10 settings.

Before I consider buying a new laptop, I'd like to know what practical steps I can try to speed up my windows 10 dell laptop. Are there specific Windows 10 tweaks, cleanup methods, or hardware upgrades (like SSD or RAM) that work well on older Dell laptops?

Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

It's a combination of things that starts with insufficient RAM.

Evaluate the cost of a RAM upgrade in light of the system value though - - you may be better off with a new system.  Windows 10 is now end of life, if that's a consideration.

If you are going to speed up Dell Laptop in Windows 10.  Here’s how each step helps and what it involves:

1. Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs:
When you start your laptop, many programs automatically launch in the background. Some of these are essential, but many are not. Disabling the ones you don’t need means fewer apps competing for resources during bootup, leading to faster startup times and improved overall performance. You can do this through Task Manager by going to the Startup tab and turning off the programs that aren’t necessary.

2. Disable Background Apps:
Windows 10 allows certain apps to run in the background even when you’re not actively using them. These background apps can consume CPU, memory, and network bandwidth, slowing down your system. By turning off background apps you don’t need, you free up valuable resources, which helps speed up your Dell laptop in Windows 10, making it more responsive for everyday tasks.

3. Disable Search Indexing:

Windows Search uses indexing to speed up search results, but on older or slower systems, this process can sometimes cause lag or slowdowns. If you rarely use Windows Search or don’t mind slower search results, disabling indexing can reduce disk activity and speed up Dell Laptop in Windows 10. This tweak can be especially helpful if your system feels sluggish during general use.
