HDD failure of a Inspiron 15 3000 Laptop
My friend's laptop shows this when booting up :

I used a bootable USB to load the OS in the USB and tried to check the contents of the laptop's hard drive but asks for a password for BitLocker which is not known.
The machine is i3 (possibly 7th gen) Inspiron 15 3000 Laptop.
What has to be done now ? Replace the HDD with a 1TB SSD one ? Or can the HDD be repaired ?

Hi
The BitLocker key should be stored within their Microsoft Account, and copied from there.
IF you get access, obviously the first thing is to make a backup/copy of the data.
Then consider next options.
Please can you confirm the Make Model and OS, along with any configuration details like touch screen, backlit keyboard, SFF or tower etc etc.
If in doubt please ask.

The person who owned this laptop passed away 1.5 years ago and the laptop is with his wife now who has no idea about any of his credentials.
This is an Inspiron 15 3000 i3 which was probably bought in 2022 from the US since the charger has the US plug point and not the Indian one. No touch screen etc.

Without the bitlocker key (and with an unrecognized hard drive coupled to that) all you can do is replace the drive and start over.
Most systems of that age are SATA-only and will take a 2.5" SATA SSD to replace the hard drive.
Anything more specific requires knowing the exact model number (Inspiron 3501, 3593, etc.).
