G16 7620, RTX 3060 showing phantom 640W GPU power and severe FPS drops
Hello,
I am experiencing a persistent issue with my Dell G16 laptop equipped with an RTX 3060 mobile GPU
The problem started like a year ago maybe after system updates I didn't know because I was using lightly the capacity of my laptop, and it causes severe performance drops in games and benchmarks.
Symptoms
- GPU frequency stay at 210 MHz
- FPS drops massively (up to 80% performance loss in some games)
- Monitoring software (HWiNFO® 64,GPU-Z,MSI afterburner,Alienware command center…) reports phantom GPU power around 640W, which is obviously impossible for a laptop GPU
- rarely the GPU briefly boosts back to normal clocks (~1700 MHz) and performance becomes normal again before dropping back (it happens after freshly turning my laptop and play a game then after 20mn he goes back to 210mhz)
What I have already tried
I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting and attempted many fixes:
- Used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove GPU drivers and reinstall clean versions
- Installed several different NVIDIA driver versions to test stability
- Downgraded the BIOS step-by-step to older versions from 2023, when the laptop was working perfectly
- Flashed the GPU VBIOS
- Freshly formatted Windows and reinstalled the entire system from scratch
- Tested different power modes in Alienware Command Center and even reinstalling it completely
- I tried to overclock it a bit , I can now reach 810mhz which is still low but at least I can play some games like league of legends but I cant overclock it more because if it turns back to the normal state (1700mhz) it will reach more and the laptop will crash
Despite all these steps, the issue still persists.
Additional notes
- The laptop cooling system has been cleaned
- Thermal paste on CPU and GPU has been replaced
- Temperatures appear mostly normal except occasional spikes
- The GPU power reading shows 640W, which seems like a sensor or firmware issue
System Model : Dell G16 7620
Current BIOS Version : Dell Inc 1.39.0 23/12/2025
i will show you two pictures before and after lunching a game "resident evil 4 remake" which i was able to play it in high quality and good fps and now i cant even play it +15fps

Try flashing the latest Dell BIOS, do a clean NVIDIA driver install with DDU, and turn off all power-saving settings for the GPU in Device Manager.
