G15 5530, power adapter options
I just bought a G15 5530 that will double as a work machine. My work does not require the same graphics power for gaming (which I will more than likely do at home using an external monitor and peripherals). The 5530's max 64 RAM and second hard drive was the selling point for my budget and needs at the price I was able to get it.
Was curious if it is possible to use a different power adapter that is not as heavy expecting that means it would not have the same power output as the stock one. If so, are there BIOS or Windows 11 settings I could change for "work mode" limiting what the laptop needs for power?
Thanks.

Dell G15 5530 specifications state two power adapter options: a 240-watt adapter; and a 330-watt adapter. It's possible that the 240-watt adapter is intended for systems with the lower-spec GPU, though the specs don't state that.
If your system shipped with the 330-watt adapter, it's possible that you might be able to use a Dell 240-watt adapter and the system might reduce performance.
I have an old XPS with discrete GPU that came with a 130-watt power adapter, but 90-watt power adapter was also listed as an option. If I connect the 90-watt power adapter, I get a message that the system will run at reduced performance.

ejn63,
That is very useful to know about connecting an external monitor for gaming. Using the machine for gaming is probably less than half time I expect to do that (have a gaming desktop already). I'm assuming using an external monitor for less graphic intensive purposes (work) would be okay.
I got the machine primarily based on the price at the time and I could max the RAM to 64GB and add a second drive (again mainly for work).
I will look for other machines that fit the 64GB max RAM and second drive and compare what I paid for this.
Thank you.

filbert,
Thanks for the response and info. I am looking now on the Dell site for the 240 adapter. Do you think a 180W adapter might be too low or not a good choice for my purpose?
Thanks,

Anything that is rated below the stock adapter won't run the system at full speed. I would also reconsider the choice of this system if you plan to game using an external monitor -- it's just not designed for that. Even many Alienware systems struggle to drive an external monitor without overheating during gaming; this is a budget gaming system that will struggle to an even greater degree in attempting to handle that.
