Same problem with my laptop. Unnecessary overheating and suddenly after bios update my battery started draining fast. On my usage I used to get around 3.5 hours of battery backup easily before the update but now I only get around 1.5 hours which is very annoying.

I also had this issue when using my dell docking station for connecting two monitors. After going into the bios and disabling the switchable graphics and connecting a single monitor to the HDMI port of the laptop I no longer am experiencing this issue.

This is a setting in the BIOS. To disable switchable graphics in the BIOS on a Dell computer, you can do the following:

I have the G15 5521, uses the same BIOS file as the 5520. Interesting that they are different. Do you have an Nvidia graphics card?

I also have this issue with windows and in linux ( arch and pop os) the nvidia card is not properly shuting down even tho
reports d3cold because the battery drain is 40W+ when nvidia-card is in d3cold and 20W when both active . I have checked every config file for arch and the problem is the same , 40W+ when nvidia card is disabled , this also started when windows automatically updated the Bios firmware ( there is an option in bios to let software like windows to update bios )
I clearly remember my linux config broke after updating the Bios so i tried a workaround of that but no avail.
so the solution to our problems looks like to forcefully downgrade Bios to 1.28.0 somehow , i will be grateful if anyone would help me with that.
bios rollback, and windows dell bios app wont work too .

Hi all,
I just noticed a new BIOS update 1.30.0 was released today. Could you please install this latest BIOS and let us know if it resolves the lagging and stuttering issues?

I have also been troubleshooting this ever since the 1.29.0 update. The 1.30.0 update released today has not fixed the problems.
The NVIDIA GPU is constantly drawing significant power, even though it is idle with no programs running on the dGPU. GPU-Z and HWiNFO both show high temps and power draw with 0% GPU usage.
Battery drain is very high while using the laptop, and it gets noticeably warm even when it's just sitting idle. This continues during Modern Standby: the laptop stays hot and drains enough battery to go into hibernate after less than 15 minutes. Running a powercfg SleepStudy points to the NVIDIA GPU remaining active and preventing a low-power state.
I have also seen others reporting this issue elsewhere, on Reddit r/Dell: Dell G15 5520 Constantly Overheating After Automatically Updating To BIOS v1.29

I also have the issue after the 1.29 update. CPU temps just don't go below 55°C at any moment, it even heats up in sleep and if its unplugged by chance, the battery drains like crazy.
The issue persists even after the 1.30 update yesterday. While some people are saying it could be the NVIDIA GPU is staying active and failing to enter a low-power state, drawing power even when no when there's no program using the GPU. I don't really think that could be the reason as I'm also facing heating issues even in BIOS menu when the NVIDIA drivers have no role to play.
And all of us facing the same issue after the 1.29 update makes it evident that the BIOS is actually what's causing the issue. And the Dell team releasing the 1.30 update without leaving the issues unresolved is profoundly disappointing to witness such oversight from a reputable company like Dell.

@DELL-Nat M Not at all, the thermals are as worse as it gets. The laptop even heats up in sleep.

I did. They gave me simple troubleshooting instructions like calibrating battery and changing a few settings here and there, which I was sure was not gonna do much. At last, they asked me to email my battery report. Later they couldn't assist me further and escalated my case to the Senior Escalations team.
