Frozen on black logo screen after attempted upgrade win10 to win11

I attempted to convert my 7306 (13") from win10 to 11 to match a new desktop.

All downloads seem to go through ok then it said it will install. Silence since!

After about 12 hrs tried to get into bios but no luck - totally locked out of windows.

Even tried the battery disconnect but no change.

So I have a black screen with the Dell logo and it wont go any further.

Any suggestion would be MUCH appreciated.

Hi @Chino de Oro

I have resolved the problem & this is what I did.:

I ordered a SSD adapter. But still waiting for my larger SSD to arrive.

So I took out the ssd & powered up & f12. It offered the bios screen so figured that the problem was with the existing ssd.

I used the ssd in the adapter connected to my other system & transferred  most of my D drive data.

Used Minitool to shrink/resize D & enlarge C partitions.

moved ssd back to laptop & voila. Within a few minutes the upgrade to win11 completed & all ok.

Will put the new drive in next week should be good for a couple of years :-)

MS could do a better job with their messages.

Thanks again for your help.

Assuming that any important data has already backed up externally.  Just make an installation USB drive with Windows 11 Creation Tool and performing a clean installation.

Force shutdown the system, remove power and battery, press and hold power button for 30 seconds for system hard reset.  Reconnect power and boot with F12 for one time boot menu.  Select to boot with the USB drive to perform Windows 11 installation.

Thank you - a few questions as this is new area for me.

I do have backups but hope to save as much as possible - just in case!.

Would it be better to try to reinstall W10 instead of going to W11. The SSD is/was quite full already (512GB).

I had tried your suggestion which I saw on another similar post from you (as I have a recovery usb for w10) but F12 only goes to display 'preparing one-time boot menu' & freezes so I dont get the opportunity to do anything.

Power key works fine for on/off. I have read on other posts that Ram should be unplugged too but on this unit its soldered on the motherboard?

I have created a w11 on usb & tried without battery removal with same result - will disconnect & try again but expect to be blocked again :-(

Thks

Hope this makes sense

Hopefully I can cover all your questions.  If you still have data on the boot drive, save the drive and use external enclosure for data retrieval.  Replace the drive with a higher capacity SSD to resolve the storage space issue.

You can install either Windows at your preference.  A new solid state drive may or may not resolve the locked up at Dell logo.  If hardware reset did not help, you can perform an RTC reset by plug in the AC adapter, press and hold power button until you see the light blinks then let go.  System may cycling on and off a few times.  Access F12 again to see if USB boot can be selected.

You may want to preview this Windows 10 installation tutorial for the basic installation process.

Thanks will do that - will take a few days to get bits & pieces

Can you recommend a good/reliable SSD 1TB for the laptop?

Will let you know how it goes.

Review and take your pick from these samples, they all have very high review ratings.  Verify their warranty and avoid the product with hassle process.
