Every few minutes, touchpad moves cursor but tapping does nothiing.

My Inspiron 15 5510 has a problem with the touchpad.  Every so often, although, it will move the cursor, I cannot obtain any left-hand or right-hand mouse key functionality.  I have done the following troubleshooting.  I have:

1. Rolled back Windows 11 (24H2) to the previous version.

2. Tried to delete and re-install the driver but after deleting what I think is the driver in Mice and Other Pointing Devices, the touchpad still moves the cursor, before I reinstall the driver.  Re-installing the driver does not cause the left-hand or right-hand mouse key functionality to return.

Rebooting the machine restores the left-hand or right-hand mouse key functionality, but eventually this stopsworking.

I have used an external mouse and this works correctly in all respects.

Any help appreciated.

Check your touchpad settings to ensure tapping is enabled and the sensitivity is appropriate. Click here for resolving touchpad issues.

To receive assistance from Dell chat support, they need to verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them.  Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offering.

@DELL-Jesse L Thanks for the advice.  Shortly after I posted the question, the touchpad started working again.  It worked for about a week and then stopped again.  I found that, giving it a sharp tap with my knuckle restored functionality.  I have now successfully used this technique 2 or 3 times.  I suspect that either there is dirt under the touchpad or the keyboard connector is a bit loose.
