Dell Studio 17 1749 CPU Upgrade
I have a Dell Studio 17 1749 which has a Intel i3 -M350 I was wondering can I put a i7 in this laptop?

From the same first-generation series of Core i7s, yes. The i7 620m was shipped with these -- bear in mind if you have slower RAM (below 1333 MHz) you will also need to upgrade the memory.

Anything more than 1333 will simply downclock to that speed with an i7 CPU. Be careful buying DDR3 memory - there are plenty of newer modules that will not work with a system this old.

would a i5 3230m work? and save on battery power or does using a i5 or i7 make no difference between the battery power

actually looking at technical.city says the 15 3230m will out perform the i7-620

That CPU won't work - it's three generations newer than the Studio system will support.
