Dell Inspiron 16 Plus Freezing When Playing Videos on Instagram or Facebook

Over the past two weeks, every time I try to play a video on Instagram or Facebook, my computer freezes and I have to close my browser. This happens in both Chrome and Edge.

Laptop freezing during Instagram or Facebook video playback is commonly caused by graphic driver conflicts, enabled browser hardware acceleration, or low system resources. Key fixes include disabling browser hardware acceleration, updating graphics drivers, and clearing browser cache. Here are the most effective steps to fix this issue:
1. Browser Settings & Extensions
  • Disable Hardware Acceleration: In your browser (Chrome/Edge), go to Settings > System and toggle off "Use graphics acceleration when available".
  • Disable Extensions: Turn off browser extensions, particularly ad blockers or video downloaders, which can cause conflicts.
  • Clear Cache & Cookies: Clear the browser's cache and cookies to remove corrupt temporary files.
  • Try a Different Browser: Test if the issue persists in a different browser (e.g., switch from Chrome to Edge/Firefox).
2. Driver & System Updates
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Open Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right-click your driver, and select "Update driver".
  • Reinstall Graphics Drivers: If updating doesn't work, uninstall the display driver and restart your laptop to allow Windows to reinstall it.
  • Update Windows: Ensure your operating system is fully updated to patch compatibility issues.
3. Power and Performance Settings
  • Set to High Performance: Navigate to Windows Power Options and set the plan to "High Performance" to prevent the laptop from limiting resources to save battery.
  • Close Background Apps: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and close resource-heavy applications running in the background.
4. Other Potential Cause
  • Check Network: A slow or unstable internet connection can cause streaming to freeze.
  • Scan for Malware: Run a virus scan to ensure no malicious software is hogging resources.
