Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming 7577 – Severe Core Clock Drops Below 300MHz

I know my laptop is old, but it struggles to run even older games. In Red Dead Redemption 2, which recommends a GTX 1060 3GB, my GTX 1060 6GB still fluctuates between 5 to 45 FPS. The core clock drops to 170MHZ, and GPU temps hit 85°C within 4-5 minutes of gameplay. Buying this laptop was my worst decision, I feel like I wasted $300 on it.

The gaming performance lag was due to CPU throttled.  Check and verify if it was caused by thermal (overheating) or the power adapter not being recognized.

The system is about seven years old and if it has not had internal maintenance (thorough cleaning and replacement thermal pads) that's long overdue and should help significantly.

@ejn63

Will this solution work?
The problem with my laptop is that when the GPU temperature reaches 85°C, the GPU core clock speed drops from around 1500 MHz to just 150 MHz to reduce the heat.

Because of this, the FPS in games goes from 50+ to below 10, and this keeps happening in a loop — a few minutes of smooth gameplay, followed by sudden FPS drops for a few seconds, again and again.

This happens in every game that puts even a little bit of load on the GPU.

@Chino de Oro

The problem is with my GPU, not the CPU.
My CPU gives stable performance, but the GPU starts throttling when it reaches 85°C.

Once that happens, the GPU clock speed drops heavily, which causes a sudden drop in FPS.
For example, the game runs smoothly for a few minutes (like 50+ FPS), then suddenly drops to below 10 FPS for a few seconds.
This keeps happening in a loop, again and again.

When the GPU overheats like this, it performs so badly that even a Pentium PC might run the game better at that moment.
