Dell Inspiron 15 3511 and 3520 hinge issues

I purchased the Inspiron 15 3511 and 3520 (for my son) and encountered the same hinge issues with both models.

The hinges on both devices broke, causing the bezel to detach and small plastic pieces to chip off from the back. Additionally, it is very difficult to open the lid once it is closed without risking screen damage.

My son’s Inspiron 15 3520 hinges broke while it was still under warranty and were repaired at no cost. However, my Inspiron 15 3511 broke just two months after the one-year warranty expired.

I can’t even open my laptop and am now using an external monitor, keeping the system always on to get things done.

After 15 years of using Dell computers, I am very disappointed and will not be purchasing from Dell again.

The Inspiron design has significant problems. It seems as if Dell has intentionally designed these hinges to break, forcing customers to extend the warranty to maintain them.

You can click here for information on the Dell Hinge Policy.

If already out of warranty, click =

How to Arrange an Out of Warranty Repair on Your Dell Computer

If the laptop hinge or hinge assembly fails outside of the purchased warranty period, or is a result of customer caused damage, then the customer will be required to pay for the repair, shipping, and parts using our expired warranty service offering. The customer may also opt to purchase the necessary parts to replace the hinges themselves or have a local technician do the work.

My hinges broke my back cover a few days ago as well. After only using it since Juni which is crazy. I saw a video where they untighten the hinges a bit so they have less power and recommned opening and closing the laptop in the middle only which. Do you know if the back cover of the 3511 alignes with the 3520(my model). As i am looking to replace it but can't find a compatible one. So when you do replace yours just do as was recommended. Seeing as dell sells parts they know there are issues. Why not just fix the issues...

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 3520, and my right hinge just broke. My one-year warranty expired about two weeks ago, and I'm very disappointed in Dell.

Hi, my 2019 out of warranty Inspiron 15 3520’s left hinge just went as I closed my laptop for the evening. How do I get it repaired via Dell.

I am at a loss for words, reading all the same issues here. I have a Dell 3520 - which was purchased Dec 2023 - 2 months out of warranty now and the right hinge is broken. The quotes I am receiving to get this repaired are ridiculous. How can Dell manufacture a product with such a bad component that is guaranteed to break?

@Deviil how much did it cost to repair your laptop?

I never ended up repairing it. I just went and bought a Thinkpad gen 4 and it's been awesome. I ended pulling out the internals out and installed them in a box to create a small form factor desktop....

They wanted nearly the cost of the laptop so I just bought a new laptop from a different manufacturer instead!

I have the same issue with the broken hinge.

what a poor design.   Very cheap and disappointing.  Time to switch to Lenovo.

@DELL-Jesse L

I purchased a Dell Vostro 3520 laptop on December 10, 2024. I have used the laptop for its intended purpose, and I continue to use it. This is beyond dispute, even according to the service manual.

It was repaired in the service center on 11/05/2024. Diagnosis: Hinge, frame separated. Left hinge broke off from the LCD cover, I attached pictures, LCD cover and LCD frame are needed for the repair. The device was repaired within the warranty period.

On 06/16/2025, the device failed again, but now at the right hinge. Diagnosis: The right hinge is broken. The hinge broke off the LCD cover, I attached pictures, the LCD cover and LCD bezel were needed for the repair. Dell refused to repair the device under warranty with the following reference: “Dear customer, as checked, the LCD cover and LCD Bezel were already replaced for this system, and there will be no Hinge tightened issue for new parts. Hence, additional LCD cover and LCD Bezel cannot be dispatched again.”

The service currently – this is my information today – recommends that we ask the device to be taken out of the brand service and that we report the error ourselves, maybe they will be more lenient towards us(?!) than the ProSupport customer service, and then the device will be repaired.
This is concerning for several reasons and is simply not the procedure for repairing a warranty device. The brand service cannot shift the responsibility onto us or the end user, this is not an assertion of interest. But, if they really cannot do anything else to resolve the case, then who can we turn to in this case? The device is used as intended, this is beyond dispute, the service worksheet is clear evidence. So, it can be stated that the end user is not to blame for the failure. Please help resolve the case.
Thank you very much for your help.
Frank

In less than a year, my laptop’s hinge and screen frame broke twice. As a student in the middle of my MSc studies, this caused major problems. I had to pay for repairs twice (around 200 euros) because I needed the laptop immediately. I didn’t even reach out to Dell to fight for a replacement or warranty coverage because I simply couldn’t risk the time and stress of providing endless proof and battling customer service. This is the reality for many people who rely on a single laptop to get through important work or studies. Companies like Dell know this very well. Blaming "accidental damage" for what is clearly a serious design and quality failure is unacceptable.

What’s worse is the sustainability nightmare and greenwashing practices this represents. Dell promotes itself as a sustainability leader with recycling programs, but the repeated issues documented by multiple users on forums (Reddit, YouTube, and here) expose poor product durability and the intentional short life cycle of electronics. Sustainability is about making products that last, not just recycling. Major tech companies have a responsibility to produce durable products. Instead, they’re pushing out poorly built laptops that break easily, forcing expensive repairs or replacements to increase profits. This not only wastes consumers’ time and money but also contributes massively to electronic waste (the fastest-growing waste stream on the planet). This is a perfect example of how Dell and other companies fuel e-waste through short lifespans, poor repairability, and weak support, encouraging frequent replacements.

Until then, save yourself the headache and avoid a Dell Vostro, pay around 300 euros more upfront to brands that are guaranteed to last longer.
