Dell G16 7630 - RTX 4060 permanently capped at 30W after BIOS update - Requesting I-REV corrective firmware

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out hoping someone from Dell or the community can help me with a serious firmware issue on my Dell G16 7630 .

**The Problem:**
After updating the BIOS beyond version 1.18.0, my NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU became permanently capped at 30W. The official power limit for this GPU on this model is 140W — it was previously operating normally above 80W. This means the GPU is now running at less than 22% of its actual capacity, making the laptop completely unable to perform gaming tasks it was designed for.

To make things worse, the system enters both power throttling and thermal throttling immediately upon GPU load — even with perfect temperatures. I recently replaced the thermal paste with a high-end compound, and temperatures remain well within safe ranges during throttling. This confirms the issue is firmware-level, not thermal.

**What I've already tried (without success):**
- Updated VBIOS to the latest version (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Firmware Update Utility)
- Enabled "Allow BIOS Downgrade" in BIOS settings
- Attempted to flash BIOS 1.18.0 via USB — blocked by BIOS Guard at hardware level
- Clean reinstall of NVIDIA drivers using DDU
- Disabling and re-enabling GPU in Device Manager (used to work as a temporary fix, no longer works)
- Checked thermal modes, power settings, and laptop mode sensor
- Modified Windows power throttling registry settings
- EC Reset (Embedded Controller reset)

**My situation:**
I purchased this laptop second-hand and I'm located in Brazil. I contacted Dell US support via WhatsApp and they initiated an ownership transfer, but it was rejected because I don't have the original owner's information. Dell Brazil refuses to assist because the laptop was originally purchased in the USA.

I am aware that Dell has issued corrective BIOS versions (I-REV) specifically for this known issue on the G16 7630. I would like to formally request access to this corrective firmware.

Is there anyone from Dell who can assist me with obtaining the I-REV BIOS for this model? Any help from the community is also greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Interesting.

I suggest you run GPUz and get some base-line reports.

Then install and use MSI-Afterburner (setup auto-loading Profile #1) as something like this:

Core-voltage +0 mV, Core +0mhz & Memory +0mkz (so basically, Stock-Clocks),
90% Power-Limit, 83c Temp-Limit, Auto-Fans with Sync

That's what I use for my for RTX-4080.

HWiNFO64 is another good program.

Finally (IIRC) the Nvidia cards need "plenty of work to do" to shift-into higher-power modes.

@Tesla1856 Hello! I can't change the limits on my MSI Afterburner. Maybe it is some Dell G16 limitation... I can change only the frequencies.

DELL-Nat M mentioned the i-rev BIOS in that thread back in September 2025. But the later BIOS after September should have the i-rev fixes built into them?

@DELL-ChrisM2 In my case, the 30W problem started after BIOS version 1.18.0 and persists on all later versions. Unfortunately I cannot downgrade back to 1.18.0 because the system blocks it, even with the downgrade option enabled in BIOS setup.

My understanding is that BIOS versions after 1.18.0 introduced very aggressive power limits on the RTX 4060, capping it at 30W. The only stable version where the GPU operated correctly at its full limit was 1.18.0. Is there any way to restore the original power behavior from 1.18.0, either through a corrective firmware or a new BIOS update that addresses this specific issue?

I am having Dell G15 5530, and also having this exact same issue.

It was fine on 1.30.0, the unreasonable throttle came back on 1.32.0.

I don't understand what's the point of packing a 4060 in a laptop and making the user carry an ultra 330W charger when you're limiting it to 30W.

* There is not a Dell article that discusses this.

The G15 5530 and G16 7630 are in the same family and share BIOS. So articles apply to both.

I found two recent applicable Dell articles for you to read through =

May 18, 2026 = Triggering Laptop Mode on Dell G15 5530 and G16 7630 Laptops Limits the Power to the GPU

May 19, 2026 = GPU Power Limited to 30w Under Extreme Conditions on Dell G15 5530

As well as an applicable post on the Portuguese board which has some user workaounds. Using Chrome browser, right click, then click Translate to English.

Good find. So, there is an accelerometer-like device in the laptop? How does limiting the dedicated GPU's power consumption provide a better user experience? I'm not complaining, just curious.

Dear, @DELL-ChrisM2

I have already read and tried the solutions suggested in previous posts.

Rolling back to BIOS 1.18 is not an acceptable solution for me because I need the latest security patches and fixes included in newer BIOS versions.

Also, this is clearly not just me and him in this. There is an entire Telegram community with more than 3,500 members dedicated to discussing and reporting the persistent 30W GPU power limit issue on the Dell G15 while we are waiting for you to fix it in a BIOS update

It has been over two years since this machine was released, yet the unreasonable throttle problem still remains unresolved.

Almost every day I encounter the 30W problem. My GPU temperatures are usually around 50–55°C, which is definitely a safe condition for the GPU to boosts to 100W, yet rarely do I see it actually boosts to 100W.

This is extremely disappointing because Dell has always had a reputation for strong quality control and reliability. That reputation is exactly why I chose Dell over Lenovo Legion or ASUS ROG, who has none of the issues with throttling and thermal management.

Unfortunately, the BIOS behavior on this product has been a major letdown.

I sincerely hope Dell will take responsibility for this and release a proper BIOS fix instead of recommending users downgrade to older firmware versions.

* I do not have an answer to this question.

Assuming that all have installed GeForce RTX 3050/4050/4060/4070 VBIOS V0.0.8.2, A02?

* Agreed. Note that was a user reply, not a Dell statement. According to our BIOS "Important Information", you cannot roll back.

1.32.0 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.30.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.31.0 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.30.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.30.0 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.29.1 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.29.1 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.27.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.28.1 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.27.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.22.0 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.16.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

1.21.1 stated = Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.16.0 or earlier due to downgrade restrictions.

Dear @DELL-ChrisM2,

Thanks for your input.

What do you propose I should do to mitigate the 30W issue once and for good?

Could you notify the engineer team to have it fixed?

Sincerely

* Unknown.

* We Forum Liaison are not on the computer model teams. We do not have direct contact to the engineers. All we can do is present the data from the Forum (thread, number of users, number of replies, computer model, etc.) to them via an internal tool and wait. Which we have done. When we get something, we post it. The number of unique cases created through GHN (Get Help Now) using unique Service Tag numbers is also fed to the computer model teams.

It's surprising how they still haven't managed to work out a solution to a critical problem that exists for 2 years.
