Can I use 1Tb in Inspiron 3891 M2 slot?

Hello, the default SSD in the M2 slot that came with my 3891 unit was a 256Gb NVMe, and has finally reached almost 99% capacity.

I am thinking of upgrading to 1Tb, but the specs says max SSD capacity is only 512Gb.  So before spending much on something that I may not be able to use, I hope to seek advice from 3891 users here.

Has anybody encountered this situation and will a 1Tb NVMe work in the single M2 slot in a 3891?

Thanks much for any advice

Per the product spec sheet, I would recommend capping out at the 512GB mark. It is a standard M.2 slot running at PCIe Gen 3 NVMe speeds, so that isn't to say a 1TB drive wouldn't work, but it could have the possibility of not being compatible. If you want to test a 1TB drive, then I'd recommend going with a retailer that has a good return policy. If the 1TB drive doesn't work, then at the least you'd be able to return it and go with a 512gb drive. If you get a Gen4 NVMe drive, then it will operate at Gen3 speeds per the limitation of the port so thats another thing to keep in mind.

Or if you want to go an alternate route, you could buy a 1TB SATA drive and then use the SSD as your boot drive and transfer data over to the 1TB. That should be an easier plug and play solution that won't need you reinstall Windows onto a new boot drive.

The listed specs likely refer to the maximum capacity that the computer could have been shipped with from the factory. A 1 TB NVMe should work with your model, but I wouldn't go any higher than a 2 TB drive.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to just go per the specs sheet.

I read somewhere that there may be issues regarding installed SSD detected in BIOS but not detected on Windows or vice versa, and requires reconfiguring Windows and the BIOS, which I definitely would not want to engage in now. I just need a larger bootable SSD for my growing stash of programs.
