ac adapter problem

New Inspiron 16 5640.  Computer crashes with all browsers.  Closes programs willy-nilly.  Windows has been uninstalled and reinstalled with a clean boot.  Discovered that computer works fine on battery.  Plugging in with ac adapter causes crash usually within minutes.  Error codes:  status access violation or power kernel.  Dell support has  not been helpful. Insist it is a software problem.

Did the problem arise before or after you reinstalled Windows?  And when you installed Windows, did you install the chipset driver and power management software?

How is power management set -- it should be to "balanced" or "cool" -- not to high performance?

@ejn63 The problem started in Jan. Been in shop 2x. Tech at shop uninstalled/reinstalled Win.  Don't know about chipset drivers or power mgt. software.  Will inquire.  Power management set at balanced. According to Dell Support and Win. Update all drivers are current. Thanx for being interested. Am old lady--not tech smart.
