Wrong BIOS installed -> Update not possible

Hi,

I just realised that I have installled the wrong BIOS (for Inspiron 7577 instead of 7559) and probably since a long time. I have installed Version 1.17.0 as you can see it in the screenshot. This is the latest BIOS for the 7577-series, but I own a 7559. Now I cannot update it to the right / newest version 1.30 for Inspiron 7559. I received the folowing error message. I also tried older versios of th BIOS, but that also did not work.

Erros message of BIOS 1.30 upgrade:

Photo of my BIOS with wrong version:

I also tried "Recover BIOS" using the BIOS recovery tool, as described in this video. But that did not change anything.

I installed the wrong version due to my invoice from DELL. I can send it to you if needed. In the invoice it says "Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming Series -7577. That is why I picked the wrong driver.

I hope that you can help me. Sometimes my Laptop crashes when making music, but this could also have other reasons. But that is the reason why I checked my BIOS and found this problem.

I hope that you can help me.

Thanks and best regards,

Michael

We can't see your second picture, at least not until a moderator approves it, even if you can see it now.

I'm confused... BIOS updates typically can't be installed on the wrong system. You shouldn't have been allowed to install a BIOS update for the Inspiron 7577 on an Inspiron 7559. And the 7559 probably wouldn't even boot, if you had been allowed to install the wrong BIOS.

Adding to my confusion is you tried to install "...newest version 1.30 for Inspiron 7559". But the newest BIOS version for the 7559 is v1.3.1 (dated 25 Jun 2019).  Did you leave the dot out between the 3 and the 0 when you posted "1.30"?  And where/why are you choosing 1.3.0 if the latest is 1.3.1?

Click Start>Run>type in: msinfo32.exe and click OK. When that opens select System Summary in left pane and look in right pane. Exactly what PC model is listed there and what version of BIOS is listed? Post the info, not a picture, so we'll be able to see the info immediately...

Maybe because my servicetag was in the photo. Here is another one:

"BIOS updates typically can't be installed on the wrong system."

I thought the sam. I just saw the BIOS Version 1.17.0 in BIOS and was wondering.

"But the newest BIOS version for the 7559 is v1.3.1 (dated 25 Jun 2019). "

True. I am sorry for the confusion. I tried 1.3.1 and later 1.3.0 and even older versions. None worked.

""Click Start>Run>type in: msinfo32.exe and click OK."

There it says 7577

"In a previous post, back on 04-10-2022, you said "I have also got an Inspiron 7577...".

True. My problem is that in my account here it says according to my service tag that I own a 7559. So that is what caused all th confusion.

So now I know that the information here in my account is wrong and I definately own a 7577. I am sorry for the confusion. Thank you very much for your help!!!

So I have installed the right BIOS:

Thanks!!!

Glad you got it sorted and BIOS got successfully updated.

I suspected your Service Tag could be visible in that image, which would get it "rejected". Never post Service Tags in an open forum like this.

I'll ping Dell contacts and see if they can sort out your account so the Service Tag matches the correct model number...

My Dell contact said, since PC is out of warranty, just ignore the Service Tag in BIOS from now on when looking for updates.  Go directly to the Inspiron 7577 support page to look for future updates.

I'm curious, does the Service Tag label that should be attached to the bottom of your PC have the same number as in your System Info screen shot? (Don't post either of them here.)

If they're different, try using the Service Tag from the label to see what PC model the Support site identifies....

Even more confusion, at least for me...

In a previous post, back on 04-10-2022, you said "I have also got an Inspiron 7577...".

In this new thread you say you have Inspiron 7559, not an Inspiron 7577.  So are you talking here about a different laptop than the one you mentioned in that other thread?

March 5th, 2023 12:00

Right. I did not think about that.

Thank you very much!!

Thanks! I think I will not forget which mode is the right one

The service tag on my laptop and the one in the system info are the same.

Thanks for the info about the Service Tag number in BIOS and on the tag being the same.  At least msinfo32.exe correctly identifies the system.

This apparently wasn't the first time the Service Tag misidentified an Inspiron 7577 as an Inspiron 7559.   @Tatolino spotted another thread where several users reported the exact same problem, as far back as 2018.  Probably won't make you feel any better, but at least you now know you weren't singled out.

Strange I spend so much time just because of the wrong number.
