Which SSD should I Buy for my Inspiron?

Hi there everyone,

I have an Inspiron 3671, which has a 256GB SSD and a 1TB standard disk drive. The SSD is full, so I looked up SSDs that are compatible with my computer. The list shows two different 512GB SSDs, and I'm not sure which one to get. Any ideas?

Thank you!

You're quite welcome. Glad to help...

Shouldn't be hard to move those Windows folders. Be sure to confirm that all the files in those existing  default Windows folders on C: (SSD) get moved to the new folder with same name on D.

If that still doesn't give you enough free space on SSD, consider uninstalling some apps that are on C: and reinstalling them on D.   Hopefully this will postpone the need for a bigger SSD.

Instructions to remove and install an SSD are in the Service Manual. But, like I said, you have to take steps before physically swapping SSDs to reconfigure Windows, clone the existing drive, and transfer the image onto a bigger one without having to completely reinstall Windows and all your apps...

Maybe you have a geeky friend or relative who can assist...

You probably want a 2280 SSD because it's longer than a 2230 SSD of the same storage capacity (80 mm vs 30 mm) so the chips can be further apart and probably stay cooler.

Hint: You don't have to buy the new SSD from Dell. Look at well-known brands (eg, Samsung, Crucial, Western Digital, etc) at various online shopping sites. They should all be compatible with this PC model. Compare read/write speeds, cost per GB plus shipping charges, warranty, reliable/trustworthy reviews, etc for what Dell offers vs other brands at other sites...

BTW: Have you tried moving all Windows default folders onto the 1T HDD (D drive) to free up space on the SSD (C:)? You can also uninstall some apps from Windows on the SSD and then reinstall them, this time directing their installation onto the 1T HDD to free up even more SSD space. That might give you some extra time before you really have to replace the 256 GB SSD.

When you're ready to install a new SSD, post back because there are steps you'll need to take to image the current SSD and transfer that image onto a new SSD, including increasing the size of the C: partition to use the extra space, which otherwise will be wasted.

Ron...thank you so much for all of your help! I appreciate all of the details. I'd like to try to move the Windows default folders onto the D drive first.

I'll follow the link you gave for the Windows default folders. I'm a total noob, It looks like a helpful article, so cross your fingers for me.

I will definitely post back once I get the new SSD. If I can do this without taking the CPU to the shop to get it done, that would be great.

Thank you again and have a great day!
