which software can solve a Checksum BIOS error on Inspiron 3252 ?

Inspiron 3252

Inspiron 3252

If support determined start up issues due to a  Checksum BIOS error  were not due to hardware or battery

and they determined it was instead a software problem does this mean to fix the problem

1) reinstalling Windows

or

2) support sending by email some sort of Dell software download that is not the OS

thanks

If you're sure it's not a CMOS battery issue (and you've replaced that and cleared the CMOS), it's not software-fixable. Given that the system is 16-17 years old and probably worth about $20-30, it's likely best recycled and replaced.

Are you sure about that I thought Inspiron 3252 release date was 2016, just 7 years old

You're correct about the year, but it's still a system worth about $25-$50 -- not worth a mainboard replacement if the battery replacement didn't solve the issue.

You might be able to rescue this PC by doing a BIOS update following the procedure under Installation Instructions here for Updating the BIOS from DOS (Non-Windows users)

You'll need a bootable USB stick (typically 2GB) which you can create using Rufus (free). You can do this on any Windows PC.  Then copy the BIOS .exe file onto the bootable USB.

When that's done, plug USB into Inspiron 3252 with power fully off. Then power on and immediately start tapping F12. Assuming the F12 menu opens, select the option to boot from the USB stick.

At the prompt, type in exact name of BIOS file you saved on the USB and press Enter.  Leave PC entirely alone (don't power off, press any keys etc) until the prompt reappears in the window. Then power off, disconnect the USB and see if PC will boot now.

No promises...!

Thanks Rohe.  How much risk is there if that doesn't work ?

Right now sometimes it boots.  It stop taking pin, password only now.  Often it doesn't boot and I have to turn the power off and on once or twice. Then the white screen comes up saying Checksum BIOS error and I choose continue and it boots

I already put in a new Duracell batt in there

I did the support assistant scans , which said nothing wrong

and updated BIOS

I had wondered if Dell support had some kind software they could send me by email as a download which would re-do the drivers or some Dell software replacement of some kind that has nothing to do with Windows

I that a thing ?

An aside

I had watched videos, more than one  on replacing that battery which I looked at carefully. When it came down to doing it was super hard physically but I eventually did it

If I do this bootable USB stick thing do I always have to do it that way of is that a one time thing?

thanks

I'd hold off on trying to install a BIOS update via USB for now.

Did you press/hold PC's power button for ~30 sec after removing old battery (PC unplugged), before installing the new one? If not, you may want to do that before going any further, to make sure BIOS got reset.  Were you asked to set the system date/time?

Replacing battery shouldn't be that hard. See here. If necessary, use a plastic scribe (or maybe the tip of a plastic knife, nothing metal!) to release the battery from its socket.  Hold battery by edges and avoid fingerprints on it.

How did you update BIOS, inside manually inside Windows, or using SupportAssist/Dell Update inside Windows? Are you sure a new version number actually got installed?

There is no software Dell or anyone else can send you to solve this problem. If it comes down to it, you'd have to either replace the motherboard or send this board to a professional who can replace and/or reflash the BIOS chip on your board.  And as @ejn63 said, may not be worth the expense...

I did hold the power button about 10 sec after removing the battery. I used the support assistant to update the BIOS

and the update is now showing the new version like it's supposed to.

I bought it from Bestbuy , I forget maybe 4-5 years it was a refurb.   It's been through heavy use since then.

Maybe I'll try another battery and if that doesn't work keep using it until it dies.  I had spoken to support who said it was a software issue and the fix would involve losing my files so I made an image on Macrium but didn't g through with the $99 because like you guys are saying, that would not be worth it since I paid under $200 for it. I forget what it was it might have been round $150 even.  I verified that the Macrium image was working although it was on a flash drive and I saved on the 3 locations not the 4th that required much more memory. I watched a video on doing it and on they video that 4th one was grayed out so I'm not that concerned (although I don't understand exactly)

So even though it shows the new BIOS update is installed, it's still giving you the checksum error message?

When you do the battery again, unplug PC and press/hold power button for ~15 sec before opening the case. And press/hold power button for ~30 sec after removing battery, before reinstalling it...
