Swapping motherboards on a dell g5 5000 from LGA1200 to a AM4 socket

Dell G5 5000

Dell G5 5000

I have been looking at a Ryzen 9 5950X CPU as an upgrade from the very outdated CPU that the Dell G5 5000 has (The Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10400F) and i realize that since the motherboard for the Dell G5 5000 has an LGA1200 socket, i couldnt insert the Ryzen into it. So now with the basic Dell G5 5000 specs (the specs), ive been wondering what motherboard i can get instead of the one that came with the Dell G5 5000 that can fit all the same components (Like the GPU, Ram, etc.) while having an AM4 socket.

I believe the G5 5000 uses a proprietary 6 pin Dell TFX form factor psu (like that for XPS 8940) which can not apply to standard AMD AM4 board.  you would need to change psu too and you could potentially use a SFX 24/4 pin standard psu to fit the space of Dell TFX psu.  Users had validated such SFX psu can fit XPS 8940 chassis.

in addition you would need to rewire power button cable to work with non-Dell AM4 motherboard.

Is this doable? Read this thread for things to consider about the G5 5000

Is there an AMD motherboard that fits inside the case and is compatible with the Dell (non-standard) PSU which uses a 6-pin connector to the motherboard.  Or will you need a new case and new PSU?

You may need a different CPU fan and heat sink for an AMD motherboard.

Will an AMD board have all the necessary connectors for the fans?

Dell typically uses customized connections to their front panels but the wiring isn't publicly available.

Add in that a new motherboard means you'll have to buy a new license for Windows from Microsoft because the license you have now is tied to Dell's Intel board.

Why not just put the $ toward a new PC with AMD CPU, if that's what you want, and avoid issues and problems?

G5 5000 oem board is non standard

the board is mounted on fixed M3 studs of chassis floor (the board itself has no cpu heatsink mounting backplate)

it is not promising that an empty G5 chassis would fit a standard microATX board in terms of mounting hole spacing

in addition, user need to twist off those M3 studs to allow new backplate to be installed for non-Dell board

it is not a trivial project.

@redxps630  Resurrecting this thread to hopefully answer a question that I have: do Dell motherboards (in their OEM cases) generally not have backplates behind the CPU/heatsink? Or is that motherboard and model specific?

Thanks.
