Power Supply fan not running
Hi all,
I have a Inspiron 5680 with a D460EM-00 ps that just quit on me. I did the test with the button on back. When pushed the system lights up, get a green light, but the fan does not spin. I disconnected everything from the ps, drives, GPU, and the MB. Push button on PS and the green light lights up, but no fan. I suspect a bad PS, which is what Dell says also. So, I look at replacements and the EM model is about $120 but a D460AM-00 is $70. I looked at the plugs and they seem the same. Was wondering if there any other replacement PS that will work, even if I can upgrade the watts a little. Any advice would be great. Thanks

you can use standard 24/4 pin modern ATX psu in 5680 but if you have a slim dvd you want to make sure the new psu has a slim sata power connector, as not all of them do. The standard sata power connector for sata hdd/ssd are too large for the slim dvd power socket.

Thank you all for your responses. After further investigation, I have found the fan inside the PS is bad. Doesn't turn on when the test button is pushed. After removal of the fan and test, it failed. Likely burned up inside. I'm pretty sure the Smart (?) PS will not supply power if the fan fails a internal check to stop the PS from burning up. Ordered a new fan. If anyone else has any insights or thoughts please chime in.
