old AMD Athlon 64 pc XP32 very slow

XP32 in an old pc that was booting fast

left powered off for a few months

testing again

boots very slow

I thought maybe hdd is bad

replaced hdd did clean XP32 install

excruciating slow install

no error

Is it because the cpu is auto downclocked in run time

did not have time to test out this suspicion

it can POST but just loads OS very very slowly

replaced w another Athlon 64 mobo, same ram same hdd, boots very fast again.

no loud cpu fan

I put it away and then I found its cpu dropped out lying in another case and pins were bent.

used a tweezer to straighten the pins and managed to install it

it was able to boot and showed the cpu spec

but then bios said unsupported cpu, then pc shut down

I have another old Acer motherboard that has a similar Athlon so I swapped cpu

now the board is booting smoothly and XP boots fast on it

verdict: probably bad original Athlon cpu on this board causing excessive slowness

Who knows?  I was going to suggest check the RAM, but you replaced the MB and it works.

I had never seen an old motherboard/cpu degenerate in this way: works but very very slow.  I am not certain replacing cmos battery would help as the pc posts quickly.  it just loads and runs OS too slow.  install XP is super slow too.

"replaced w another Athlon 64 mobo, same ram same hdd, boots very fast again."  I thought you replaced the MB and all is well.

We don't know why RAM sometimes fails or what fails on it, so I guess the same goes for the old MB.

XP always took a half an hour or more for me to load, including the SP's.  That compared to Win10 that only takes me 10-12 min. for me to load on an SSD.

I'm surprised you're still using XP on one of your PC's.  I got to a point a few years ago whereas I couldn't look at it anymore.
