Losing Internet Connection
Before leaving for a brief vacation last weekend I shut down and unplugged my Inspiron 3020 running Windows 10. Since I returned, it can’t maintain an Internet connection. After reset it connects for a few minutes but then both firefox and edge lose connection. Phones and another pc working ok on same wifi. Tried connecting directly to router with same results. Geek squad ran diagnostics and reset network, but no change. Wifi icon in tray always says Internet access, even after browsers won’t connect. All other computer functions working ok. Suggestions?

Wi-Fi only?
Can you still ping?

Hi
Just to focus on the connection...
Attached is a TXT file, which, if after reading thru you decide it is "safe", change to
0toF.bat and run it.
You only need to concentrate on 1, 2 and 3.
OR
Winkey + R and type cmd.exe to run the commands manually.
ping 127.0.0.1 & pathping 13.107.4.52
ping 192.168.0.1 & ping 192.168.1.1
tracert 13.107.4.52
Some others may help, like 6, 7 and C.

Well, I have to admit that I didn’t really know how to run the batch file, but I did run the pings and tracert.
these were run after connection failed
ping 127.0.0.1 ok
Pathping 13.107.4.52
it reported 8 hosts and on the ninth it reported * * *
it then computed statistics for 200 sends and said no packets were lost.
pings of 192.168.0.1 and 1.1 both failed, timed out.
Tracert of 13.107.5.52 completed in 21 hops. The times from that node were 53, 56, and 52 ms.
Did we learn anything?

@MikeO29 I repeated the pings on 192.168.0.1 and 1.1 after I Restarted my computer with the same results. I have Internet access for 5-10 minutes after each Restart.

Hi
My reasoning is based on ""Wifi icon in tray always says Internet access,""
A ping uses a different 'level' to communicate. So if there was a connection the Ping would prove it.
0toF.txt is renamed 0toF.bat and you just double click on it.
A screen, like the picture should appear, and you make your selection.
So next is the way / path, along with the Lease time.
The vast majority of Home users are on 192.168.0.1. or 192.168.1.1, but some routers can be 10.0.0.0 or even 172.16.0.0 etc.
So the first few IP values of the tracert are important...
ann@Lap1 _gateway (192.168.1.1) 1.789 ms 1.701 ms 1.667 ms
2 * * *
3 63.130.172.35 (63.130.172.35) 12.247 ms 12.267 ms 12.396 ms
4 195.66.244.82 (195.66.244.82) 15.042 ms 15.036 ms 15.590 ms
5 * * *

I am in the Heart of England, and 13.107.4.52 is "Microsoft" near Washington US of A.
Your results suggest you are on the moon or somewhere equally remote, my 15 to your 50 milliseconds. Do all your devices take such a long and tortuous route?
NB: Geek Squad and Vacation suggest US of A though.
So without more exact info it is hard to suggest a course of action.
If in doubt please ask.

OK, I found the source of the problem, but don't ask me to make sense of it.
The Geek Squad is the name of the technician group at Best Buy. They usually do a pretty good job, and this time was no different, although they did not identify the specific problem, but there's a good reason for that, which I will explain.
As a reminder, my browsers were losing their connection to the Internet after about 5 minutes following a Restart, but the wi-fi icon in the tray always said I had Internet access.
After a full day of troubleshooting it myself I took it to Best Buy. They updated some drivers, reset my network, and said it was working fine. I brought it home, but nothing had changed. I took it back to Best Buy, they connected it to their wi-fi, and it worked fine. So here is the mystery! It worked fine at Best Buy. They told me to contact my ISP, but five phones and at least three other computers were successfully using the wi-fi at my house.
I returned home, hooked it back up, and had the same symptoms.
I asked Windows co-pilot what it thought, and it gave me 6 things to try, some with multiple parts, most of which I had already or Best Buy had done, but I worked my way through the steps - 1-5 made no difference.
Step 6 was to turn off my antivirus and give it a try. I had already tried a Repair function to no avail. So I put my antivirus in Passive mode, and low and behold, everything worked fine. I was going to delete/reinstall my antivirus, but decided to hit Repair one more time. This time it worked. I took it out of Passive mode and it is still working after several hours. Remember that it worked at Best Buy.
This makes absolutely no sense to me, but for now it's working - I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Hi
Anti-Virus is not the likely cause at all.
On my W11 I have AVAST "security" for the Anti-Virus part, which is fine.
It also bundles a 'safe' Browser of it's own and a FIREWALL.
So a FIREWALL is considered a necessary thing, along with A/V, however they usually replace the Windows version, and I suspect that is your problem.
https://support.avast.com/en-gb/article/antivirus-firewall-application-rules/#pc
However I don't understand why it took 10 minutes to actually take effect.
