Dell G5 5000

Dell G5 5000

I'm wondering if anyone can help me find a good upgrade that'll fit my PC to get better graphical performance. I'm a little confused about compatibility even with the listing

My current configuration:

Nvidia GTX 1660 Super (6gb)
Intel i5 10400f (2.9Ghz)

24gb RAM

PSU 350W

@redxps630 Hm do you know if they will work on a 350W PSU, as well if the other makes e.g, MSI, ASUS of the Nvidia cards work the same?

for non-Dell Nvidia use user benchmark to search for validated gpu model

use online psu basic calculator to estimate psu need.

Recommended PSU Wattage:420 W

And keep in mind that you may have to disable Secure Boot in BIOS setup before installing any aftermarket GPU. Otherwise, your PC may not boot...

@RoHe if I did that incorrectly, would I still be able to fix it?

@coopersnow - You will just have to remove the new add-in video card and reinstall the Dell OEM card.  Then boot and tap F2 when you see the Dell splash screen.

When BIOS setup opens, disable Secure Boot. Don't make any other changes in BIOS, but be sure to save the change you made and exit setup. PC will automatically boot to the desktop.

Shut down normally in Windows, power off, swap in new video card. and reboot...

So I got an RTX 4060. Luckily turning off secure boot on a dell was super easy. The downside is my PSU only has 6pins, so need to upgrade to the 500w to power it.

@redxps630 Hi, question for you. Is the Asus dual nvidia geforce rtx 3050 oc edition able to fit and run inside the g5 5000. Looking to upgrade my 1660ti to the 3050 and need to know if it's able to get in and run in the pc (preferably without issues)

upgrade depends on your budget but the RTX 3000 such as 3070 is the top Dell gpu for this model.
another user favorite these days is RTX 4060

I never stumble across a post where I can actual contribute, so I hope this helps someone out there!

First, my stock G5 specs to establish a baseline. Bad cooling on a 10900F, 3060TI, 32GB DDR4 @2933 MHz, 500W PSU.

I recently upgraded the GPU with a PNY XLR8 OC 4060TI dual fan model. Size is nearly the same except length, and it just fits the box. Power was close enough to the same I was comfy with it (I think Nvidia recommends 550W PSU, but the same is true for 3060TI if I remember correctly). So two things to consider with the GPU: footprint and power draw. The 40XX RTX are significantly more efficient. I remember thinking I could've done a 4070 series in this box (dual fan, not triple, so check the specs) but I couldn't justify the price difference since I got the 4060TI for less than half a 4070 series. Of note, I got a 4070TI Super for my work rig, and it's great but not by $500. Ultimately this is just a math problem. I did not have to change any bios settings or otherwise for this upgrade, just plug in and turn on.

Regarding CPU - it's all about cooling. I have no reason to upgrade from an i9. I'm not sure I'd upgrade from an i7. At an i5 I may do some math, i3... you get the idea. This machine was designed by engineers that I pray never build a bridge because people will die. This is the single best upgrade I did. Noctua chromax CPU heatsink and fans. I don't remember all the specs, but I'll post pics and can check if someone needs it. Stock, the CPU fan points into the side wall... because someone thought air goes through walls? IDK. Regardless, CPU upgrade is great but the best thing you can do is spend $100 on better cooling, which will make your current hardware run better and not throttle. I replaced heat sync, CPU fan and back fan. Immediate and noticable performance boost. I remember running benchmarks in Far Cry 6 after this upgrade.

I stumbled across this post because this rig has more upgrades coming - notably, I think I can add 2 or 3 more dual 2.5" bays in the top, replace the front 3.5" bay with more cooling and maybe squeeze another 2.5" bay there.

This is a beast of a desktop in a small package but, as I said, these engineers were (probably still are) morons. One important thing I should also note - I think there are two different PSU sizes, the 500W being the largest. I understand it's a Dell propriety design, so you can't simply upgrade with third party parts.

At the end of the day, these are all just math problems. Crunch the numbers, figure out what you can and want to do. An important part of my upgrade was that my Dell 3060TI easily fit inside my HP ML350 but the 4060 would not. My daily driver also sports a 4090. This upgrade for me was all about API endpoints and load balancing. Best advice I have is think about your needs, wants, budget, and most important CRUNCHTHE NUMBERS! Also, keep asking questions!
