Inspiron 7700 AIO SSD Upgrade?

Has anyone successfully upgraded a 7700 AIO with the existing SSD 2230 form factor to a newer SSD with 2280 form factor?  If so, did new SSD have existing or need a heat sink?  Thank you.

Inspiron 7700 AIO does not support 2280 form factor drives.

The 2280 isn't a "newer" form factor.  It's just another size of the SSD M.2 format.  There are 5 in all.

  • 2230
  • 2242
  • 2260
  • 2280
  • 22110

It just so happens that the 2230 and 2280 are the most common sizes of M.2 drives.  2230 is common for laptops, and the 2280 is most common for desktops.  And Dell's AIO machines are basically laptop parts stuck to the back side of a screen.

If you're thinking that you can only get a larger capacity SSD from a longer physical drive, that's not true.  Micron, Western Digital, Team Group, Corsair and Seagate all make 1TB and 2TB capacity SSDs in the 2230 size format.  Look it up on Newegg.

Besides, as @Chino de Oro says, the 2280 size is not an option anyway.  There is no mounting point on the motherboard for an 80mm long drive, and there's also an IC chip in the way.

You could, however, mount a 2242 drive in that machine.  There is another stand-off screw hole for a 2242 drive.  You just have to remove the stand-off for the 2230 mounting screw and put in the other hole.

As for a heat-sink, with the piece of metal that covers the motherboard laying pretty flat in that area, I don't think there's room for one.
