Inspiron 5680 upgrade to i7-9700 success

Hey all,

I know this is essentially a very niche target audience i'm trying to reach, but I was hoping this would be able to help any other 5680 owners that were looking to do a CPU upgrade like myself and weren't able to find a clear answer.

Essentially, I went from an i5-8400 to an i7-9700 (Non-K) and it does in-fact work, I am currently typing on this system as we speak. Just have to ensure you have your BIOS updated as there was an update a few years ago that added compatibility for 9th gen CPUs (again, non-K versions only).

I had looked through this forum, reddit, other places prior to the upgrade and saw mixed answers/no definitive answer about whether the 9th gens were truly compatible or not (a lot of people had issues, but it seems it's because they were trying to use the K-series CPUs), so for those that have the 5680 and want to upgrade the CPU within the board's limits, i7-9700 is your go to (whether it's worth doing this or just starting a whole new build for newer CPU architecture or not is a different story).

Hopefully this post helps somebody :)

Actually, you can go all the way to a Core i9-9900 if you want.
