Inspiron 5680 Powers off after two seconds
A friend called last week telling me his Dell Inspiron desktop would not stay on. He would press the power button and it would shut off immediately. Blue lights and fans turned onl if he pressed the black button in the power supply, it would randomly stay powered on. Eventually, that shopped working. The power supply passed the self tests. I removed the m2 drive, the video card, memory, etc. to eliminate any of the components and still the same. told him it was most likely his motherboard.
i bought a used motherboard from eBay pulled from a working system. Installed today and I am getting the same results. I removed the board from the case to eliminate a ground issue. Not sure what to do next. I find it hard to believe that two motherboards are behaving the same. I even used another Dell power supply (I work in IT for the past 30 years and have built thousands of systems. We have tons of Dell units that we sunset after three years. Any ideas? No CPU was pulled, so bent pins are not possible.

try replace cmos battery w a new one then clear cmos settings by motherboard jumper
if you are using same power button cable for both boards, try test the board outside case on a cardboard and short the two power switch pins temporarily.

Just want to add that I have a Rosewill Bronze 1000 wt power supply (new but old stock) that I tried with the original board and it did the same thing, both inside and outside the case. I would think it is safe to use this power supply safely. Can anyone verify this? Thank you.

@redxps630 I wrote in my original post that I connected everything outside the case to eliminate any case grounding issues. I will try the cmos battery tomorrow but I can’t see why that would work. I’ll get aback to you.

Are you using the original power button to test both motherboard outside case?
If so, I alluded to unplugging the power button cable and try jump start the power switch pins of motherboard. If board can stay on, the power button may be the culprit

I had it out of the case and shorted out the pins to start it and it didn’t start. But, I did as was suggested and cleared out the cmos Barrett. That work! I can’t believe it. In all my years, I never saw a bios stop the system from staying powered on. Thanks. Learn something new every day. This can be marked as solved.

good to know. yeah the cmos setting was corrupted so it could not properly interpret power switch action. my Inspiron 3668 can not stay off no matter how power button is pressed and cmos cleared, while your 5680 could not stay on.

It could be a power supply issue despite passing self-tests. Try a different PSU, reset CMOS, and check front panel connections. If the issue persists, the CPU or motherboard might be faulty.
