Inspiron 5675, SSD NVMe M.2 2280 compatibility?
Hello. Transitioning my one main drive from mechanical HDD to SSD. Do not consider having two drives in the PC. Would you please be so kind as to assist me?
My PC is: Dell Inspiron 5675 - Octal Core AMD Ryzen 7 1700, Motherboard Chipset AMD X370, AMD Taishan, AMD K17 IMC. DMI Motherboard Product 07PR60.
I would like to know which type of PCIe M.2 2280 SSD are supported. I am considering (SAMSUNG 980 SSD 1TB PCle 3.0x4, NVMe M.2 2280, Internal Solid State Drive.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08V83JZH4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1
I see PCle M.2 2280 on my Motherboard I am just not sure if it would support Gen3X4 or Gen4X4 SSD's.
I run the Crucial scan and it claims to support all modern generations, but I would prefer to stick with the 3rd just to be on the safe side but I am not sure if Gen3X4 would work on the PC. I would prefer Samsung since the TBW's on them is 6 times higher than Crucial SSD's. But that is not the issue here.
I would like to know if I can simply purchase any 1 TB PCle 3.0x4, NVMe M.2 2280, Internal Solid State Drive. I do not see any lower generations on sale, nor I know if they exist. I also have a SSD SATA option on the motherboard, but I would prefer to use the NVMe M.2 2280. Also, there is an issue with some of these SSD's that use some of the RAM (I have 32gb) for better performance, but there is a warning that if power goes out, system files get corrupted.
I do not mind if the system will run a little slower, just want to have one - 1 TB PCle NVMe M.2 2280, Internal Solid State Drive and remove the 1 TB 7200 mechanical drive from the PC.
Any advice with compatibility would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

While the PCIe slots are gen 3, your M.2 slot 2 can only support Gen 2x4 speed.
The SK Hynix P31 is a better choice over the DRAM-less SN550 and it has very good performance specs.
You may want to look into using PCIe adapter to gain better speed. But anything is still way faster than your current spinning HDD.

Samsung, SK Hynix, Intel drives are considered reliable and good with performance.
For NVMe, you may consider 970 pro, 970 evo plus for performance and high TBW.
For SATA, the M.2 form factor works the same as 2.5" form factor but availability is lacking from popular brands. Samsung evo line or Crucial Mx will be suffice.

The simple upgrade to solid state should improve the performance significantly. There is no need to setup Optane cache drive to get lower performance. While there are different options and choices, replacing your over 5 years old HDD with a P31 seems to be your best option. The 1 TB gives you better value and plenty of space for average daily usage. It may outlive and is lasting longer than your PC.
Try not to look further and spending that time to learn and plan for your storage migration.

Your system should have x2 M.2 slots, M.2 slot 1 will support M.2 SATA drive, while M.2 slot 2 will support M.2 PCIe NVMe drive.
Released in 2017, Ryzen 7 1700 and X370 chipset will support PCIe gen 3.
While the nvme drive in your link will work fine, it's one of the DRAM-less type.

Thank you very much. I will consider your advice. When you write PCIe gen 3; does it mean it will support also Gen3 x4?
Looked up two of them,
Western Digital 500GB WD Blue SN550 NVMe Internal SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe 8Gb/s, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 2,400 MB/s - WDS500G2B0C

or rather:
SK hynix Gold P31 500GB PCIe NVMe Gen3 M.2 2280 Internal SSD, Up to 3500MB/S, Compact M.2 SSD Form Factor SSD, Internal Solid State Drive with 128-Layer NAND Flash
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DKB5LWY/ref=emc_b_5_i?th=1
Read good reviews and stability with the SK hynix Gold P31.
Both have RAM I assume. Should I go with the hynix Gold P31?
Thanks for your time and support.

Thank you again for your info. In fact, I am not really looking for anything of very fast in SSD. Just faster than the 1 tb mechanical SATA Drive (7200). I have few programs running and the boot time is very slow. Perhaps even replacing the drive with an SSD SATA III in M 2.1 would be enough. Would you advise please some of 1 TB SATA SSD's like that which are rated being stable and running for 2-3 years? Still faster than the current mechanical drive. Perhaps some of them have DRAM as well? Thank you so much for your time and all the help.

Thank you so much for being so kind in helping me as I know nothing about SSD's. I really do appreciate your time and effort in helping me. I guess I will go with buying the SK Hynix Gold P31as per reading so many reviews and high TBW. Could I buy 1 TB instead of 500GB? I know there used to be limitations when this PC version came out in 2017 but after so many BIOS updates, I just assume they removed this limitation. I read here that several owners of this PC are installing 1 TB SSD's without problems.
Do you this I could risk it with 1TB size or just buy the 500gb SK Hynix P31 500GB PCIe NVMe Gen3 M.2 2280?
In no way I want to take advantage of your kindness and keep bothering you. If I may ask you, I was reading about Intel® Optane™ Memory: (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000024018/memory-and-storage/intel-optane-memory.html
Do you think it is a good idea to use it? I am surprised that some versions are for SSD drives as well.
If I was to keep the current spinning HDD and purchase Intel Optane Memory for it, would I benefit from it or I should just go and remove the old drive and go with the fresh install of Windows 10 on SK Hynix P31 1 TB PCIe NVMe? Thank you so much in advance.
