Inspiron 5675 BIOS Update Help Needed

Help Looking to flash update the BIOS to version 1.5.0 (from 1.4.x)

No OS installed, this is using the BIOS flash update feature.  The BIOS_IMG.rcv file is not recognized by the file picker, although the USB can be navigated.

Does the file need to be renamed to something else perhaps?

Tech support took my number to call back within 2 minutes if the call dropped, then the call "dropped" and I never got a callback, so I'm here now instead.

Uninterested in reinstalling windows, just looking for a way to successfully upgrade bios with whatever minor tweak is needed from the update instructions.

Thanks.

Hi

As it is a .exe file, Windows USB installer and use the Recovery area that gives you CLI as X:

and try that.

OR a WIN-PE recovery USB and similar.

It is an InSYDE bios flash that may run under FreeDOS.

BUT the possibility exists of needing MS windows.

No sign of an rcv file.

@ann_droid

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=ccx24&oscode=biosa&productcode=inspiron-5675-gaming-desktop

That's the rcv file from the BIOS update page.

Select "Operating system:  BIOS" to see.   No need for a windows executable or windows installation to perform a flash update.

Just trying to sort out why the flash update menu doesn't permit me to select it.

MY mistake, I thought

""Uninterested in reinstalling windows, just looking for a way to successfully upgrade bios with whatever minor tweak is needed from the update instructions.""

Meant you wanted to update the BIOS on that machine.

File Format:CPG BIOS Executable for Windows/DOS
File Name:Inspiron_5675_1.5.0.exe
File Size:24.51 MB
Format Description

@ann_droid

I do want to update the BIOS on that machine, especially since it's a security update.

I wanted to use the file on the support page I linked to, which is NOT a windows executable file, but an rcv file.

Hope that helps clarify what I was requesting.

The file and instructions I referred to are available on dell's support page for BIOS updates that I linked to and listed under the "BIOS" option for operating systemNot the windows operating system.

Hope that helps make sense of it.  :) :) :) :) :)

@knucklehedd

Hi

Well your link goes to .exe file, and not an rcv for me.

#########################

The BIOS_IMG.rcv file is a crucial component for BIOS recovery on Dell computers.

This file is used when a Dell system encounters BIOS-related issues, such as failed updates or corruption, preventing normal boot-up.

To create and use a BIOS_IMG.rcv file for recovery:

  1. Download the latest BIOS update for your specific Dell model from the official Dell support website.

  2. Extract the recovery file using the command prompt:

    text
    <downloaded BIOS filename.exe> /writehdrfile /writeromfile

This command generates a .hdr file.

  1. Rename the extracted .hdr file to BIOS_IMG.rcv.

  2. Copy the BIOS_IMG.rcv file to the root directory of a FAT32-formatted USB drive.

  3. To initiate recovery:

    • Unplug the computer's power cord

    • Insert the USB drive

    • Hold down Ctrl+Esc while plugging in the power cord

    • Release the keys when the system powers on

If successful, the BIOS Recovery page should appear.

If not, you may see LED notifications indicating the recovery image was not found (e.g., 3 amber flashes followed by 3 blue/white flashes).

It's important to note that the process may vary slightly depending on the specific Dell model.

Always refer to the most up-to-date instructions from Dell's official support for your particular system.

######################

That tells me you need a DOS/WINDOWS system to achieve what you want, where-as I would just the .exe rather than extracting it.

##############

""Just trying to sort out why the flash update menu doesn't permit me to select it.""

My understanding is that you don't need/use a flash update menu, just a bare .rcv file, but I could be wrong.

I wish you luck.

@ann_droid If you're using the BIOS flash update and not using windows, which is absolutely possible, you don't use a windows executable because windows hasn't even entered the picture yet.

Hopefully someone else might be able to shed some light on what needs to be done with the rcv file, or if the flash update instructions have some sort of missing information (like renaming the file, etc)

Thanks all the same for your help.
