Inspiron 3670, S3225QS, HDMI, built-in speakers not working
Just got a new S3225QS monitor and connected it via HDMI to a 3 year old Inspiron 3670 running Windows 10. Picture is great but the computer doesn't recognize the built-in speakers. I did test the monitor on a quite new Dell and the speakers worked fine on that one. Dell technical support was of zero help.
So, can the Inspiron 3670 be updated to recognize the new monitor? Tried reinstalling the drivers to no avail. Would an update to Windows 11 help?
Appreciate any thoughts y'all might have. Thanks

When you tried reinstalling the drivers, was it for HDMI audio driver?
Verify that you have proper HDMI audio driver being installed. For example, NVIDIA High Definition Audio Driver or Intel High Definition Audio Driver. It would allow audio to transmit through HDMI connection and the monitor speakers be available as select sound output.

Thank you for your reply. The only audio drivers shown are: Dell AC511 USB SoundBar (which I am using in lieu of the speakers on the new monitor), Intel Display Audio, an Realtek Audio. That's it. Nothing about HDMI audio.

In the system tray area, select volume and at the right of volume slider, select Intel Display Audio for output device. That should switch playback audio from USB speakers to (HDMI) monitor speakers.

@Chino de Oro Thank you very much. That option is not shown to the right of the volume slider. In Device Manager, Intel Display Audio is shown. However, in Device Manager, there is no way to select HDMI, and it shows that it is a current driver (4/16/2021).

Am on Win 11 system right now. If remember correctly, to change the sound output device on a Windows 10 PC, right-click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings." Then, choose your desired output device from the dropdown menu under "Output". You can also access the Sound settings through the Start Menu > Settings > System > Sound.

@Chino de Oro Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, HDMI is not shown as one of the choices on the dropdown menu. Unless I can find a way to enable HDMI and have it included as an option, I am unable to utilize the built in speakers on the new monitor.

Thank you for your reply, Chris. On mine, System Sound looks like this: If I connect an external speaker via USB, that (and only that) shows up as an output device.

Looking at the rear of your Inspiron 3670, is the S3225QS HDMI cable connected to the top HDMI out port OR a bottom added video card HDMI out port?
The S3225QS Menu- Audio- Speaker = ON. Volume is 50 or higher.

@DELL-Chris M It is the top HDMI out port. The computer does not have an added card with HDMI out. I can confirm that the monitor menu shows Speaker-ON. and Volume at 50.

Thank you for your efforts, Chris.
Unfortunately, none of them have been successful. I can only assume that either the computer was built without HDMI audio capability, or that particular function in my computer is defective (likely since it was new, but this was the first time I attempted to use it).
It appears that I will need to be satisfied with USB external speakers, but I do thank you for your assistance.
Regards,
Dave

You may try to download and install/reinstall this Intel integrated video driver and rescan for hardware changes in Device Manager to see if it can pick up the Intel High Definition Audio Driver (HDMI audio driver).
Intel-UHD-HD-Iris-Iris-Pro-Iris-Plus-Graphics-Driver_PGGJR_WIN_27.20.100.9664_A00_04.EXE
Once the HDMI audio driver being installed, you should find S3225QS speakers as option for sound output device.
