Inspiron 3668 Windows 11 support

I like my Inspiron 3668 and it never missed a bit.

Do I really need to buy a new PC to support Windows 11.

Can I not upgrade the i7-7700 CPU instead ?

No, the CPU cannot be upgraded.  You can install Windows 11 in unsupported mode for now, though.

it can be upgraded to i7-7700 no problem but that cpu is not on official Win 11 cpu list.

Hi guys, thanks for all your responses.

Before I try anything, I like to wait a bit longer to see if anyone had actually done the upgrade on Inspiron 3668.

I also read somewhere that if CPU is not on the Microsoft approval list, then it is a dead duck.

It isn't, actually -- for now.  You can still install Windows 11 on a 7th gen CPU, but in unsupported mode.  Windows 11 at present will still run -- how long, no one knows.  Eventually Microsoft will enforce the CPU floor for Windows 11, and manual updates (which you'll have to do with an unsupported CPU) will also cease.

that's what I expect too.  I hate being forced to but new hardware !

unsupported mode means no security patches which is ah..

I get where you’re coming from. The i7-7700 isn’t on Microsoft’s official Windows 11 CPU list, so it’s not officially supported. That said, you can still install Windows 11 in unsupported mode, and it will run.

The catch is a couple of things:

  1. Microsoft will eventually enforce the CPU requirements, so updates might stop working automatically on unsupported systems.

  2. Security updates aren’t guaranteed in unsupported mode, so your system could be more vulnerable.

So, you don’t have to buy a new PC right away, but you’ll need to accept the risks if you go this route.

If you want, I can also give a quick guide on how to install Windows 11 on an i7-7700 in unsupported mode.
