Yes but this is also the C drive (andstartup drive). Is there some way of starting the PC from a CD and downloading the contents of that drive before replaving it?

If the system still recognizes the drive and filesystem, yes.  Your best bet is to remove the drive, connect it to a working system by USB (either with an adapter or inside a USB enclosure) and see what you can still read.

As @ejn63 stated using another machine is a good idea, or wait until you have a new drive fitted and access the old one either as an internal or via a caddy.

I feel you may need still need a BitLocker key.

The above is some years old and may be totally irrelevant to your circumstances.
