Inspiron 3020, PSU upgrade

Inspiron 580

Inspiron 580

I was gifted a Dell Inspiron 3020 and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060. The computer only has a 180 psu and no 6pin cable for a gpu. I'd like to upgrade this. What psu should I get that will fit in the case?

That model has a 460W option at purchase, but the only source of PS that will fit internally will be Dell -- anything aftermarket will require an adapter that fits the proprietary plug on the system board and have to reside outside the case, as nothing in the aftermarket is going to fit this case.

Whether Dell sells the PS upgrade and whether or not it has the GPU power plug you want  is something you'll have to ask of Dell Spare Parts (1-800-348-6147).

Thanks ejn63. When dealing with a PSU that may be external, do they make ones that have 8pin connectors for the MB? I'm having a hard time finding one that will fit.

No, but there are third party suppliers that do make conversion cables for use between  a standard power supply and the proprietary Dell mainboard connector.  Try searching Amazon or EBay for these.

As I mentioned above, you're unlikely to find a non-Dell OEM power supply that will fit inside the case, and no standard power supply is going to plug into the proprietary connector on the mainboard without a converter cable.

To upgrade your Dell Inspiron 3020 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, considering the limited 180W PSU and absence of a 6-pin cable for the GPU, you'll need to find a compatible PSU that fits in the case and provides sufficient power for the graphics card.
