Inspiron 27-7720 AIO Compatible with Samsung 870 EVO SSD SATA Drive?

Hello,

I have an Inspiron 27-7720 AIO with a 1TB M.2 2880 SSD boot drive. The Inspiron manual states that the unused hard drive slot is compatible with a 2.5-inch SATA 3 hard drive.

I want to install a Samsung 870 EVO 4 TB -2.5" Internal SATA SSD (SATA 6/3/1.5 compatible) in the unused hard drive slot. Is the Samsung 870 EVO compatible with the Inspiron 27-7720 AIO?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

It should, but to avoid unpleasant surprises, open the system and be sure the mounting hardware is present -- if it's not, you'll need to order that to fit a 2.5" drive.  It's not uncommon for that to be missing from systems that do not ship with a 2.5" drive from the ODM.

Hello ejn63,

Thanks for a quick reply. As you suggested, I opened the back cover of my Inspiron 27-7720 AIO and fortunately found that the drive mounting bracket was attached with an M3x5 screw. I will need to round up 4x M3x3.5 machine srews to mount the Samsung EVO 870 to this drive mounting bracket.

After I install the Samsung EVO 870 drive, I will restart the system using the existing SSD boot drive. I assume that this new drive that I will be using for additional storage only (not for system booting) will automatically appear in the disk manager as a second drive. I also assume that I will not have to make any changes in the BIOS since I am not changing the boot drive. Please let me know if this is not a good assumption.

Thanks again for your helpful advice.

Hello again ejn63,

I successfully installed a 4TB Samsung EVO 870 in my Inspiron 27-7720 AIO. I wanted to share some details on this upgrade to help others who may want to perform this second-disk upgrade:

  • The Samsung EVO 870 does not come with any mounting screws. I purchased 4x M3x4mm zinc plated screws at Home Depot to mount the drive to the mounting bracket. The drive connectors aligned properly with the EVO 870 installed "face-up" in the mounting bracket
  • After the EVO 870 drive installation, I turned on the Inspiron and it booted-up normally from the existing boot drive
  • To view the new EVO 870 drive, go to the Window Tools app. Then go to Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management. At the bottom of the Disk Management window you will see Disk 0 (this is the existing boot drive disk) and an Unknown Disk (this is the new EVO 870 disk).
  • Click on the Unknown Disk to initialize it using a GUID Partition Table (GPT). After initializing, the Unknown Disk becomes Disk 1.
  • Then click on Disk 1 to create a Simple Partition using NTFS formatting. After this partition/formatting process, Disk 1 is visible in File Explorer and is ready to use. As advised by ejn63, the full 4TB size of Disk 1 is recognized in File Explorer.

Thanks again for your advice that helped me with this upgrade.
