Graphics cards that are compatible with DELL Inspiron 3847

Inspiron 3847

Inspiron 3847

Hello all,

Recently, my Inspiron 3847 has failed to POST, and the reason for that is that I can't get a video signal between the desktop and a monitor. I tried different cables (both analog and HDMI), and that didn't help. I have replaced the CMOS battery numerous times, and that didn't help, either. I think I must purchase a graphics card as my PC can no longer use integrated graphics.

Will the "GIGABYTE GeForce GT 730 2GB 64-bit DDR3, GV-N730D3-2GI REV3.0" graphics card be compatible with my system? I believe I have a 300-watt PSU. Its graphics coprocessor is NVIDIA GeForce GT 730. Its dimensions are ‎6.57 x 4.37 x 0.87 inches.

Thank you all for your help! I can provide further details if needed.

If your system failed to POST, it could be other issue than the integrated video.  However, if you want to try with the GT 730 for testing, it is a compatible video card for your system.  Just make sure to source it from vendor whom will accept return.

chino is correct.   Re: I have replaced the CMOS battery numerous times,

try clear cmos settings via motherboard jumper.  also, do you get a solid white light on your power button?  If yes that is a good sign of motherboard.  if flash amber, something is wrong.

have you tested the psu itself?  use a verified working psu to test your pc if you have a spare.

@redxps630 I haven't tried using the motherboard jumper yet, but I can try to short/replace it today. I don't have an extra PSU unfortunately. Twice, when I turned on the PC, I got a flashing amber light: It blinked 5 times in a row. I think it only does this right after reseating the coin battery.

Thank you & Chino for your quick responses!

Real Time Clock Failure

we presume you have replaced the batt with a new CR2032

clear cmos would do the trick I hope

@redxps630 Oh: the problem was the real time clock? I first thought that the CR 2032 battery was dead, but I checked the voltage a few days ago, and it read about 3.2 volts, meaning it hadn't died yet. Since checking the voltage of both the HDMI port & analog port read 0 volts when the system was running, I still think the integrated graphics are also inhibiting the POST.

Update: I did try the graphics card, and that wasn't the issue. The computer only blinks amber 5 times after changing the CMOS battery. After shutting the computer off and turning it back on again, the POST error doesn't show up again.

I thought it was a failed power supply that was causing the issue, so I borrowed a Corsair CX600M power supply. After connecting the cables that I could connect, I'm still not getting any signal, and there are no new POST issues.

I think my motherboard is fried, despite it being able to provide power to the fans And USB ports. Does this mean the system is bricked?

that is possible.  I have seen bad motherboards that do that.  able to power on but unable to POST.
