Gigabit Ethernet

Does Gigabit Ethernet make any real difference?  That is (think?) 1000Mbps.  Im a little behind on what is the newest Wireless Protocol out there.  I have a  Netgear 600Mbps Router.  So again, any benefit of installing a Gigabit Ethernet card into my Desktop PC? I plan to use the router as a wireless bridge,  so I don't have to run a cable all over my house. What standard now uses Gigabit wireless speeds?
