Failure Installing BIOS Update 0.1.12.0 on Inspiron 3030 Windows 11 Home

I have an Inspiron 3030 Windows 11 (purchased brand new in December 2024).  When I tried to install the January 2025 BIOS 0.1.12.0 update, it completely fails to install.  I get to the initial "Flash" installation page and the progress bar never moves from 0%.  The following attempts by Dell Tech Support to fix this have been unsuccessful:

  • Downloaded the BIOS update directly from Dell website and tried to install that .exe file that way
  • Downloaded the BIOS update to a flash drive and attempting to install from the flash drive
  • Flashing the BIOS from the F12 one time boot menu

They send me emails with links to video with work arounds but the videos either do not apply to my device, or do not behave in the manner described in the video.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is this the Inspiron 3030 Desktop or 3030 Small Desktop?

What size is your USB stick and is it formatted FAT32?

Do you have an add-in video card or only have onboard Intel Graphics?

What video port are you using, HDMI or DP? If you have an add-in video card, are you using the port on the card, not one of the onboard Intel ports? If you're using DP, try switching to HDMI at both PC and monitor, making sure to use the HDMI port on the add-in video card, if you have one.

If you have BitLocker running, do you disable it before attempting any BIOS update?

No offense, but are you sure you're using the BIOS .exe file, not the BIOS .rcv file? Both are linked on that same page.

Two months ago, I bought an XPS-8960 with an Intel i9-14900 chip and 64GB of memory and Windows 11 Business.

I was hoping for a snappy new machine.

Instead I have a slow, glitchy computer, with weekly Blue Screens of Death since purchase date.

I've tried to update the BIOS for a week or so. Failed each time.

I've been very busy with end of year and beginning of year work, but finally chatted with support today.

They had me run some inconclusive hardware tests. All looked OK.

Then they asked me to unplug the computer from power, hold the "on" button for 30 seconds, and then restart.  It seemed to improve things at least temporarily.  Better than simply restarting, which I normally do when the computer gets too slow to use.

My five year old i7 is faster than this.  Disappointing.

@VTHokie86 - Why did you post about your issues with an XPS 8960 in a thread about an Inspiron 3030, instead of in a new thread in the XPS Desktop forum?

What version of BIOS do you have on this XPS 8960 now? There have been a number of BIOS updates to fix Intel's instability issues with Intel 13th and 14th Gen CPUs.

There are also issues updating BIOS in XPS 8960 to the latest version using either SupportAssist or manually inside Windows because of a recent Windows update. Installing BIOS using a USB stick via the F12 menu Flash Update option still works.

Because I'm an obvious rookie.  I'll post there.

Thanks,

Be sure to answer my questions when you start your thread in the XPS Desktop forum

@RoHe I have a 3030 Small Desktop.  My USB stick has 32gb and is formatted FAT32.  I have an onboard Intel Graphics.  I have an HDMI monitor.  Yes, bitlocker was disabled.  Yes, I am using the correct bios.exe file.  Trust me, I have gone through all of these different things with Dell tech support with no luck.  I have gone through their chat support, telephone support and emails with them.  Each time they try different things, check all the resources, check my device configuration, etc. - nothing has worked.   I have easily spent 10+ hours of my time on this with Dell.  I am going to wait a few weeks to see if Dell comes up with a fix because I refuse to believe that I am the only Dell user in the universe with this issue.  This community board is not used by every Dell user so just because I seem to be the first person raising the issue does not mean I am the only person with this issue.  I appreciate your suggestions and input but again, I have tried a million different things with a million Dell tech support people all to no avail.

@RoHe Like me, VTHoki86 is an obvious rookie.  I understand that you are trying to be helpful but your response to him that he posted in the wrong forum (just like I did the first time) comes across as a little hostile.

Solution:

  • Uninstall the January Windows KB update that corresponds to your system.: KB5050009, KB5050021, or KB5050009 update:
    1. Open Settings
    2. Select Windows Update
    3. Pause the Windows update
    4. Select Update history
    5. Select Uninstall updates
    6. Find the impacted update according to the operating system version used, labeled KB5050009, KB5050021, and KB5049981
    7. Select Uninstall
    8. Restart your computer
    9. Install the BIOS from dell.com/support using the executable file
    10. After a successful BIOS update go back to step 3, to enable the Windows update
  • Update the BIOS from a USB stick using the computer pre-boot option
    1. Copy the executable file to external storage (USB flash drive)
    2. Keep the USB connected and restart the computer
    3. Press F12 to enter One-Time Boot Settings (reference Flashing the BIOS from the F12 One-Time Boot Menu)
