Inspiron 3881

Inspiron 3881

Recently my monitor started failing to wake up when booting up my PC. The flashing light came on fine, but the monitor was just black and the usual Dell logo didn't appear. I changed some settings to try to resolve it. That only worked slightly as the monitor indicator light stopped flashing after leaving it for some time and stayed on, with the monitor screen now in grey, so I switched it off and on again. This time it started fine. I did this for the next couple of weeks and was happy to wait for it to kick in. However, I reset my power settings to default and now it won't start at all. I have a spare laptop, hoping for some way to access my desktop from it, by perhaps using my laptop as the desktop monitor instead. At least this would allow me to undo the changes I made. When this first happened, I suspected it was some recommended drivers I downloaded from the Dell site or Windows updates, so I attempted system restore, but it would only allow me to restore to the previous day.

I would be truly grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions. I have researched online, but nobody seems to grasp that I cannot follow their suggestions if I can't access my monitor? Please help.

Many thanks in advance.

Try replace cmos battery with a new battery and clear cmos settings via motherboard jumper.

I don’t think you can use a laptop as an external monitor for 3881 desktop.   Your issue appears to be desktop power on test/post, not monitor itself.
