desk pc with dell 11 cannot find my microphone which is plugged in

I cannot talk in zoom. I use a headphone and plug into the front of my Inspiron 3030. When I check the settings under audio, the message says, "There seems to be an issue with your microphone, please select a different device and try again." I'm pretty sure my microphone works.
